Swine flu, will it depress turnout?

No, but it does depress me. Honestly, do the SOB's have to try and frighten us at every available opportunity? It's bad enough that we're going into the next great Depression but now we're going to possibly die from 'flu like symptoms'? Hooray!

The best cure would be to go and see this film. Simon Pegg will save the day once again.

You're forgetting 2012, the pole shift of the Earth, Global Warming, and the Apocalpse. I'll still see Trek. And I'll rent it from blockbuster to watch on 12/21/2012.

I believe this Swine Flu stuff is overblown. It might be horrible for some third world countries, but in the U.S. and other places with clean, running water and access to decent medical care, it's not going to be that bad (meaning, many might get sick, but a large percentage of the country isn't going to die).

One more foretold event that could effect attendance.

An alternate take on that bumpersticker -- In Case of Rapture, This Theater Will Be . . .

. . . Well, No Where Near Empty. :)

Good topic...can't believe I didn't give this a thought before now. Kids think they're bullet proof so no I don't think the flu will affect the under 21 crowd.

Personally I think this flu is way over hyped. People get and die from the flu every year, trust me...it's always something.

On May 8 if the flu morbidity stats are pretty must status quo with today's...I'm going.

...mostly I rather see Trek XI and deal with the consequences than never ever see it because I later caught the flu and died.

Fear God dread naught.

OINK!! SNORT!! SQUEEEEEEL!!!

I don't want to die without seeing this film.

It's to die for!

you mean overblown like the great flu outbreak of 1918 that killed nearly 300 million people worldwide? we are way overdue for a global pandemic. lets hope this isnt one.

just load up on echinacea and OJ and go see the movie.

PS. plus you can always sport a mask but I wouldn't recommend it!

Well, that's not how it spreads. It doesn't care what part of the world it's in. People come back to Germany, New Zealand, the United States, Austria carrying the virus with them. It can get a toe-hold anywhere. Look at what's happened in Queens in New York City, where over 100 people may have it. The weird thing is how mild it is in that case compared to other cases.
But for some perspective, almost 2000 people a year in NYC die from the flu. That's any type of flu. And flu can't be cured, you can only treat the symptoms, so that makes it scarry for some people. For example, vitamin C is virtually useless, as are the other "preventatives." (And with vitamin C, since the body doesn't store it, if you're taking megadoses every day, you're literally pissing away the excess -- which is good, because otherwise it could become toxic.) Masks are no good as a preventative, either. None. Unless the person wearing the mask has something and is trying to stop from giving it to someone. Then, maybe.

I'm more worried about getting poked in the eye at the theater by some costumed Trekker's Vulcan ears, or getting in a car wreck on the way, or having my wife not like the movie. And, I'm not too worried about any of those. Well, maybe the last one.
