SW blu-rays have changes to the films again

George Lucas made a fun, Flash Gordon-style film in 1977, but since then, he has made pile after pile after pile after pile of steaming, filthy Bantha crap. How many fun, terrific action-adventure films could he have made if he'd just left Star Wars alone? Hell, he made one in 1981---it was called "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (which he also beat to death with spin-offs--sigh!). He could have made many, many more films that were worth watching. What a waste!!! :(:(:(:(

For someone who thinks that everything after Star Wars is a big steaming pile of crap you sure have seen a lot of Star Wars.

Care to challenge the points that I made, or will you just throw zingers at me? :mallory:

I just watched Attack of the Phantom on youtube.

It improved AOTC more than The Phantom Edit improved TPM, but I was still not satisfied with this edit. Firstly because AOTC had a deeper hole to climb out of, secondly in some places the edit went too far, and thirdly in others it didn't go quite far enough. But in other places, the editing was perfect.

Worthy of note is that with only just a little more editing he could have actually convinced me that Anakin and Padmé slept together on Naboo before heading off to Tatooine (a few remaining vestiges from the theatrical cut are all that work against this). This change is a major contribution that I prefer.

The improvement to Shmi's death scene is major. But on the other hand I think the Phantom Editor should have dropped the garage confession scene entirely.

The execution scene is dramatically improved, and without 3PO's head figuring in and with the other compression, the battle in the arena between Jedi and droids is now watchable, as it should have been to begin with.

Also noteworthy is that I really thought the outtakes that were used, that I hadn't seen yet, worked much, much better than the stuff they replaced. I'm referring specifically to the scenes with Padmé's family, and another scene between Mace and Obi-Wan when Obi-Wan reveals misgivings about Anakin and Padmé being together while he is boarding his fighter.

I totally agree with getting rid of asteroid field redux, but I definitely miss the car chase. I agree that the reordering of things during the clone army battle scenes and lightsaber fight is a substantial improvement too, but it needs a little reshooting (or new effects) that can't be done for just this sort of edit.

Damn this guy's good.
I still find it funny how Anakin and Padmé just steal C-3PO! Or maybe that was in Shmi's will.

I just watched it on youtube. It's great to watch the film without most of the vain, unnecessary, and ponderous indulgences.

I would like to make a 25-30 minute edit with the first few minutes, then as they land on the planet hidden in the transport they encounter the battle from the end of the movie!

Critic James Berardinelli about the Blu-ray changes. Words of wisdom.
inb4 shitstorm...

On TPM:
The Phantom Menace is not a masterpiece, but it's an example of how imagination, craftsmanship, and technological bravura can fashion superior entertainment out of something that is far from flawless.

On AOTC:
In a time when, more often than not, sequels disappoint, it's refreshing to uncover something this high-profile that fulfils the promise of its name and adds another title to a storied legacy.

On ROTS:
It represents the conclusion to an unparalleled cinematic achievement. Finally, after 28 long years of waiting that were only occasionally punctuated by the appearance of new story fragments, Lucas has ended with an exclamation point. The tale of a galaxy long ago and far away is complete. Only now can we truly step back and admire the full tapestry that it has taken George Lucas and his ILM wizards nearly three decades to weave.

I think all the people who don't think Lucas has a major ego problem needs to watch this video!

Especially the part where he compares what he did with the prequels to painting his house.

"If I want to paint my house green, and other people want me to paint it white, I don't think there is anything wrong with painting it green".

Ummm... are you comparing your grand space opera opus to painting your house???

Further, if you are painting a house you are going to charge people to live in, you should probably take their opinion into consideration.

Geez, that man is out of touch!

OMG, I had no idea how much butthurt can fit into one video!
Butthurt?

Granted, Matthew comes off as angry in most of his videos, but I thought that was a pretty good analysis of Lucas' statements and attitude in the interview.

The guy clearly is disconnected from reality. To say, in response to the critics not liking episode I and II that "they never really liked any of them" is pretty dishonest.

BTW, that guy kinda sounds like Sheldon Cooper!

I had to turn him off after a couple of minutes when his distorted worldview was laid bare. "The ones who just cannot seem to accept the fact that people don't like these films" He makes it sound like the prequels were universally disliked when it's just a vocal minority who were really upset by them. That let me know the rest of his comments weren't worth listening to. When Plinkett is being more even-handed and fair than you are, you need to rethink your position.

Butthurt?
Yes, very much so. He was saying something about "millions and millions of disappointed..." Wait, what millions? Newsflash, bro! Most people don't care! Only we, the internet nerds are bothered by this shit.

Perhaps, but dishonest as it may seem, Lucas always insisted that his movies are for the mainstream audiences and not just for diehards, and they're certainly not for film critics.

Star Wars fans need to get in touch with reality too, and that reality is that the vast majority of people don't give a rat's ass about any of this shit.

Yep. This was why I had to shut him off right away. The whole "Why doesn't Lucas listen to us massive hordes of outraged audience members?" thing.

Well my friend, it's because all six of you are standing together in the back of a cheering crowd of 700.

Only Internet nerds are bothered by what? The prequels? Are you calling Barbara Walters an Internet Nerd? :p

Do you remember when The Phantom Menace hit theaters? I don't think it's exaggerated to say that millions of people were disappointed in the film.

If you are talking about the changes to the films in the DVD release, I agree. Most of the people who bought the set probably had no clue there were changes in them. Or if they did, they didn't care.

The prequels, the changes, Indy IV, all of it.

And yet the DVD (which came out two full years later) sold gazillions of copies. 2.2 million units sold in the first week alone, at $30 a pop. Why would so many people spend 30 bucks on a movie that they'd already seen, and didn't even like?
