SW blu-rays have changes to the films again

I considered him on the dark side in all but name from the point he slaughtered the Sandpeople.
I agree, but the shame of the matter is, they don't portray it in the film as being that big of a deal. Not only does Padme immediately forgive him, she marries him days later! Clearly Lucas didn't consider the Sandpeople people.

If he wanted to show Anakin gradually fall, doing something not necessarily evil but questionable, why not show him slaughter actual animals. For example, is mother is lost in a cave hunting mushrooms or something. Anakin goes searching for her, and finds she has been hiding for days after being attacked by some CGI alien bears or something like that. When Anakin shows up, she dies. The bears attack, and he loses control and slaughters every one he sees.

Later he reveals to Padme what happened and that what he did, even though it could conceivably be called self defense, was done out of anger. Anakin insists that he could have escaped, and thus wasn't justified in killing them. Padme comforts him, telling him might have died trying to escape.

Come to think of it, that would have worked just as well with Sandpeople if they didn't include the killing women and children part. Just that Anakin could have escaped but chose to stay and fight. The audience is left wondering if he really avoiding escaping to kill, or if he's simply beating himself up after the fact because he hates the idea of killing.

Instead of lots of grays, we are left with a clearly black and white "Anakin is evil now" situation.

Precisely. Had Anakin only killed the male Sandpeople or the Sandpeople directly responsible for what happened to his mother that'd be, mostly, fine but he boasts that he even killed the women and children and that he's mostly glad about this and he considered the Sandpeople as less-than-human.

And Padme is just okie-dokey with this?!

And it'd also be one thing if when he did this it seemed to be out of some sort of rage or genuine anger but when he tells this story to Padme, including when he bitches about Obi-Wan he comes across more as a spoiled child who wants his blanky more than he does someone overcome with negative emotions.

I wouldn't say he boasted about killing the women and the children.

That was actually one aspect I thought was handled well. He went crazy there, he knew he went crazy but you get the impression he would do it again if he were put in the same circumstances.

We're told how great Anakin is with The Force. We never see it.

This I agree with...we hear constantly how powerful Ankain is but we see very little of it in the movies. It's a lot of lip service. He doesn't do anything in AOTC and ROTS particularly powerful. Defeats Dooku sure...but that was just because he had become a stronger duellist.

Also, in AOTC, Anakin's prescience is shown to be powerful in the air car chase after the assassin. He saves Obi-Wan and brings down the assassin's car after jumping into empty air after it. Not that this sequence is a satisfactory establishing of his power levels.

Luckily falling through a maze of wild traffic moving through three dimensions does not a master of the force make.

I just went through the deleted scenes on my prequel DVDs. I think I want most/all of them edited in as Extended Special Editions along with the scenes from the Blu-ray. I think Padme's Senate scene in AOTC as well as the family scenes in AOTC and Birth of the Rebellion scenes are absolutely necessary.

The only ones I think I DON'T want are the Greedo scene or the Plot to destroy the Jedi in Ep 3 (redundant to the scene when they hear Grevious has been destroyed). I'd probably most like them to digitally substitute some other CGI Jedi for Shaak-Ti on the Invisible Hand (or in the Jedi Temple, either way) but would like both scenes to be included to show more of Anakin's overt descent to the dark side. The Obi-wan interaction on escaping the fuel cells thing could perhaps show more of the friendship that some think should be in the movie, too.

Going back to the Sith Eyes, I think Anakin should have them from the moment he is 'dedicated' as Darth Vader by Darth Sidious for the rest of the movie, perhaps having them fade to normal when he sees Padme land, but resuming just before he yells "Liar!" and chokes her and remaining that way through the rest of the duel and movie.

I would've liked to have seen Anakin get some kind of mad rush of power after giving in and slaughtering the Sand People. It would've been nice to see him terrify himself by how far he went and the power he tasted. He's plugged himself into the dark side and swears it off. He then has a similar breakdown with Padmé, but he's not quite completely honest. He probably doesn't mention to her that he slaughtered them all, just that he killed the ones imprisoning her when he didn't have to. He tells half the truth to cover himself up.

This would've been an Anakin heading down the path, but still trying to do good. This is an Anakin who now knows how quick and easy the dark side is and how it's immediately available to him whenever he wants. This is an Anakin whose perfectly setup to succumb to that temptation permanently in Epsiode III.

Hmm... you'd have to have some sort of Wizard Duel. Padawan Anakin absorbing some of Dooku's lightning in a mini-wizard duel in ROTS? Lifting up a cruiser or something in AOTC or ROTS?

I just started watching some fan edits on youtube and I must say I am quite impressed with some of those. Others not so much. The level of technical expertise being displayed is astonishing and many of the refinements I am totally agreeing with.

One change that totally rocked my world in one of them is in The Empire Strikes Back when the first transport is escaping.
The Star Destroyer blows one of the X-wing escorts completely away outright, vindicating the concern of two fighters against a Star Destroyer, and then some.

It's only taken me 12 years but I finally got a hold of The Phantom Edit.

My favourite trim is when Jar Jar says they should go through the planet's core to get to the palace quicker - and suddenly they're at the palace!

I just watched it on youtube. It's great to watch the film without most of the vain, unnecessary, and ponderous indulgences.

The only problem I see with the going through the core edit you mentioned isn't with it per se, but it is that Jar Jar still says that going through the core is bad; the edit kind of leaves one wondering why. A little reshooting (or Fanedit.org CGI genius) to fix up dialog like this would improve things even more, but I suspect that's understood. I like most of the improvements from tweaks here and there in order of dialog, which were accomplished using just traditional editing techniques and splices.

I think this edit accelerates things only a little too much, but it's a major improvement. For example, I would have kept Jar Jar stepping in "goo". He deserves to step in goo. I also regretted the loss of some (but not all) space battle moments.

Moving on to Attack of the Phantom....

I haven't seen The Phantom Edit, but I think the section with Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Jar Jar traveling through the planet core would have worked better if they'd gone from the "there's always a bigger fish" moment and straight to them arriving at Theed (after the Trade Federation captures the Queen). The second scene with the power loss and being attacked by yet another fish, only to be saved by yet another bigger fish, was pointless.

I will get around to watching it someday as well.

Maybe they should have inserted a scene showing them tunneling their way through the planet! :)

By far the best TPM edit can be found Luckily falling through a maze of wild traffic moving through three dimensions does not a master of the force make.[/QUOTE]"]Here.

I think we were shown how powerful he was, but weren't told that he was anything extraordinary, other than "his midichlorian count is off the scale".

In my opinion, one second spent watching an edited version of Star Wars is one second wasted. Take these movies as they are or move on, there are many other films out there that you would enjoy more than Star Wars with anal retentive micro-edits.

It's kind of funny that you can interpret this post as either anti-fan edits or anti-Lucas revisions.
