Surviving the Amazing Race

Lions in Africa are still above ground, and not in the water. There have been people on Survivor who can't even swim, so that definitely puts them at risk of drowning a lot faster, no matter how physically fit they might otherwise be.

True, but whoever has the camera can easily be accompanied by a trained lifeguard. They've had seasons of experience and teams of legal counsel to think through all these problems and minimize the risk.

I don’t get why it hasn’t occurred to Derek he doesn’t have to say the letter with the rolled R as long as Claire can.

Sucks that the team with the positive test is one of the frontrunners.

There’s only one weak team left and they got bailed out by COVID. There always seems to be one weak team that has a thousand lives.

Some of them don't read the clues carefully enough.

I hope whatsername on Survivor got medical attention for her hand. That looked painful.

OMG, Jerry O'Connell needs to NEVER SING. Honestly, he needs to shut up and go away and take his hair-gelled wife with him. Why was he so good on Sliders and is so awful as a reality show host?

Why is every blonde woman on that show a fake blonde? Do they think real blondes can't tell the difference?

I'm actually rooting for one of the couples on the show.

I didn’t know Amazing Race was right after Survivor this week, I approve. Was Love Boat canceled or moved to another time slot?

One thing I approve of this year is having plane flights in between legs. Really removes the biggest element of unfairness in the show.

I had no idea. I'm busy with NaNoWriMo, and planned to just record everything and watch it all later. Normally TAR isn't on until 11 pm.

EDIT: I know what happened. They moved Love Boat to Paramount +. I already tried to subscribe to that when BB was on and it was geoblocked. This probably is too, and at any rate, I only got interested in one couple (Marty and Emily). The rest are vapid airheads.

Therefore, I will change the thread title as promised.

How did the Love Boat work anyway? I only saw last five minutes, but it seemed like they were trying to have a dating game and a vote out game that had nothing to do with each other at the same time.

Didn’t Dwight walk out with Janine’s idol or an I misremembering who gave their stuff to who?

It’s a bit weird how once more after the merge all the votes just happen to fall to black players. It’s like whenever they don’t make an issue out of it everyone slides back into their subconscious habits.

Yes.

Also, Dalton Ross reached out to Jeff, who clarified that even though Jeanine appeared to be trying to get Dwight to give her back the Idol, Survivor rules prohibited him from doing so:

I'm not particularly a fan of Jeanine's, but I do think it sucks that she got screwed by Dwight being voted out because she lost her Idol through no real fault of her own.

I think they might have voted Gabler out if he hadn't won immunity. I want him to go.

My early pick for winning is Owen. I like him so far.

The Love Boat is a dating game and weekly vote-out.

The way it works is that in every port of call, those who got coupled-up at the end of the previous episode have to compete in a challenge against the other couples. They may go on a date while in port, and can choose their official partner or someone else. The winners of the challenge get dinner at the Captain's table (the Captain leaves after a few minutes' chat about their relationship), and the keys to a fancy stateroom where we don't get to know if they actually have sex or not. The men and women take turns being "in control" of who chooses whom for their dates, and the one who is part of this winning couple gets to pick first at the "Sail Away" ceremony (this show's term for "Tribal Council/Eviction").

To make things more confusing, each port adds two new people (two of the opposite sex to whichever side has control). The idea is that the two extras who don't get chosen in the Sail Away have to leave the ship. This keeps the supply of insanely model-perfect people who supposedly "can't find love" constant and balanced. Mind you, some of them are really vapid and shallow, so it's not surprising.

They don't always choose the same dates. The parting line given to the not-chosen ones is "Shove off."

So far the only ones who might make a committed couple are Marty and Emily. They've remained a couple since the first episode.

But as I said, Jerry O'Connell and his wife come across as creepy.

The way Survivor is played nowadays with "Trust clusters" where everyone just forms loose groups of people they can work with and the least protected person goes home makes it harder to follow the narrative than it was before when everything was alliance driven.

With this group I'm just starting to figure out what everyone's name is and I have no idea who is actually working with who and who's going to get targeted next. And no clue who the actual favorites are right now. Cody seems like the boldest and most in control, Jesse seems like he's got a good handle on the social dynamics. I also like Owen but not sure he can navigate the endgame.

I don't even know which of them is Jesse. This isn't a bunch who have inspired me to even care what their names are, for the most part.

I detest Gabler, though.

I just watched my recording of Amazing Race... Derek and Claire won the leg! According to the preview, it looks like the injured twin might need to drop out next week.

Other than for covid, have there been any medical-related eliminations for this show?

Jesse's the Hispanic guy who ended up with Janine's idol.

Dave and Connor. (Young guy and his older father). Father got a leg injury. Then they came back for a veterans season and they won.

Just remembered the ending to the season Dave and Connor won. One member was waiting at the finish line and the other had to skydive in. It came down to them and Brendan and Rachel. That was a sweet moment, not only the team I wanted won, you got to see Rachel’s dreams crushed in real time.

I gained some respect for Gabler when he called out Cody and Jesse as the ones controlling the game. If he can be the one to take the shot he might win.

My current ranking:
Jesse
Carla
Cody
Gabler
Cassidy
Owen
Sami

The only one I want to win is Owen. I don't like any of the others.

That was quite the Megaleg on TAR! I'm not unhappy at all with who was eliminated - I want Derek and Claire to win. Nobody else will be acceptable to me.

That flag task... holy crap. Did the information mention even a hint that the person with the good memory also should not be scared <censored>less of heights? I don't blame Claire at all for her meltdown/panic attack.

Jesse has now pretty much locked in the final four, with two idols and only two more tribals they can be used.

Interesting how everyone is still going after easy votes and not big threats. It just speaks to the quality of social games of remaining players.

Wow, Karla was visibly pissed off! I've come to really dislike her.

As for The Amazing Race: yee-haw.gif

Very happy with the Amazing Race result. Also very happy they finally eliminated U Turns.

I’m pulling for Jesse now, I think he still has Janine’s idol so he’s a lock for the 4 now and the resume frontrunner.

I wonder if they will plant a new one this late in.

I don't think they do, with only one more time it could be played. I could be wrong about that, of course. Some people will probably go searching, given that some were just played.

I want Owen to win, though that's doubtful. If he makes it to the final he doesn't have a good enough resume to impress the others (unless he makes one hell of a speech).

Just don't let Karla win. She's obnoxious.

And can somebody tell me what the point is of wearing rings in noses? It looks ridiculous and must make sneezing, runny noses, and nose-blowing rather disgusting.

Well that ending is a little disappointing. Although, Gabler did answer the questions the best, so I understand why they voted for him, I think Cassidy played a better game, and just couldn't communicate it as well in the final questions. Not the worst ending, cause Gabler is absolutely right about the good decisions he made. Just Jesse and Cassidy deserved it more.
