Surviving the Amazing Race

No Real World in MuchMusic?

You might have seen it parodied in American comedy in the 90s.
You're asking me to remember what was on a channel I never watched 30 years ago?

I never got into music videos until YTV started using them as time fillers between shows. That's how I first saw "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats.

Did I read that right that they put Love Boat in between Survivor and Amazing Race?

Damn it. Video game time I guess. Or maybe good time to practice Japanese or guitar.

That's how the thread title reads, but I have no idea how it will really be. I was trying to cleverly fit it all in.

I'm actually surprised that they'd keep Survivor and TAR on the same day. Usually they shift TAR to either Friday or Sunday (guaranteeing I'd forget to watch since I usually watch PBS shows on weekends). Anyway, the Love Boat one doesn't start until October 5.

Okay, I find myself mindcroggled. How many of them stated that they have no idea how to read a map? And TWO teams don't know north from south?

Not that I minded them getting lost, since that probably helped Claire and Derek. Anyone else get the impression that the judge was ungodly picky with her at the yodeling task?

My impression of the scenery: Gorgeous. Actually, a lot of it reminds me of the Canadian Rockies near Banff, though of course they don't have the familiar individual mountains in Austria.

I haven’t been to that part of Canada but have seen a lot of the scenery like that in the American Rockies. Beautiful.

One thing you don’t always see by the way it’s cut is how much of the winning and losing is based on finding your way in between tasks. And if Claire and DX are really that good at it, it gives them tons of leeway for task mistakes.

I appreciated the bead thing in the beware advantage and the solution to just pretend you’re weaving a hat for fun.

I wonder if he will volunteer for the next expedition and tell people from other teams to build trust.

Claire and Derek zipped through the bells task, so that plus navigation skills helped.

The beads thing was different and clever. And now I suspect Cody will be asked to make more hats, or at least teach a hat-making class to his tribe.

How many of these "go on a mysterious expedition" things did they do in the other seasons? I don't remember.

They did it at least a few times the last two seasons. Only, the reward was an extra vote, not an idol. Just throwing more idols in affects the balance more so they might not do it as often.

I have always been suspicious of the judging in TAR challenges that require judging.

I get the impression that TAR judges, in general, lower their standards if racers continuously demonstrate difficulties in accomplishing whatever task they have to perform. Didn't all of the racers failed the yodel challenge in their initial attempts? I couldn't believe Rex Ryan successfully finished the yodel challenge before Claire. Rex Ryan's yodelling was just awful.

My attention to this was grabbed when it was mentioned that Jerry O'Connell would be the host (Sliders fans should remember him).
I see that Number One, Rebecca Romijn, is co-hosting the show. So, she has jumped from the good ship Enterprise to the cheesy Love Boat.

Well, the Love Boat one has a limited chance to grab my interest, as I've never really been into romance "reality" shows. If I like it and at least one other person here watches it, I'll keep the thread as is. If not, the thread title will be changed, as there isn't any point keeping a show that nobody watches.

Since it's in the Mediterranean, I might keep it just for scenery. But they have to show some.

I agree that judges lower their standards as people struggle more, but they still have some minimum criteria like getting the lyrics right.

This scheduling makes me wish I had something like TiVo so I could just watch Survivor at 9 and have Amazing Race go on right after it like it should.

The Love Boat one is on tonight, after Survivor (hasn't started for me yet). If you come back tomorrow and see the thread title changed, you'll know I wasn't impressed.

This “Mega leg” thing feels like just a non elimination leg with no mat check in.
They've had other shows with this type of leg, as Phil tells them to "keep racing" and go to their next destination.

Okay, the Love Boat.

The good part: Ted Lange (Isaac) made a brief cameo. I would not have recognized him until he spoke.

The so-so part: There are 3 people who caught my interest. Two of them are currently a couple. I don't remember who the other one chose as a partner.

The bad parts:

I loved Jerry O'Connell on Sliders. The one hosting this show is revoltingly smarmy. And whats'ername (his wife)... WTF was she thinking with that hairstyle? Actually, she needs to change it and get a personality. She's boring.

I find the crew completely unconvincing. Come on, captain and cruise director. There's a time and place to not shave. This isn't it. They are supposedly a real captain and real cruise director, but I just don't believe them. They come across as actors.

As for the bartender... she seems a little more sincere, but ... who names a girl "Ezra"?

There is nothing that could make me interested in who these random hotties are dating knowing full well none of them will be a real couple off the show.

I was so hoping that the girl whining and threatening to quit would be the one to lose. The twins are starting to look really strong at all the kinds of challenges Amazing Race uses.

I'm going to have to rewatch part of Survivor and all of the other two, since I dozed off to sleep. Not because they're boring, but because I was that tired, and since my TV is opposite the bed, I actually have to lie down to watch.

I did catch bits and pieces, including the daughter whining that she wanted to go home. I don't think Phil was impressed by that. It's not like they're sleeping outdoors in the rain like on Survivor or have cameras recording their every move and utterance like on Big Brother, while people are constantly lying to and about them. Sure, some parts of TAR are difficult and icky at times, but they get decent food and a place to sleep, right? Not to mention a trip around the world for as long as they can manage? The daughter should be grateful for this opportunity.

I think she’s just so unable to function out of her comfort zone she is just a person who quits anything the moment it becomes mildly stressful.

And... the whiny brat and her father are GONE! Yay!

Honestly, between her whining and his bumbling around with the metal detector, I'm just glad to see the end of them.

Now for something a bit worrisome... according to the teaser for next week, it looks like someone tested positive for covid. I wonder who it is (please not Derek and Claire!), and what it means for the race. Do they all have to go into quarantine for 10-14 days?

Petra was very cool.

Survivor... yet another person gets booted with an advantage in their pocket because they were too cocky to realize they might need to actually use it.

Question: I just realized that these people are being taken places in motorboats and have to row themselves in choppy seas without the benefit of lifejackets. How fast does it take to fall overboard and drown vs. how fast a production team member could get there to rescue them?

Love Boat: Nice to see Vicki, though she doesn't look cute anymore.

That tub bath challenge looked like it might be a bit painful for a few of them. Some appear to have noticeable sunburn on their backs.

Speaking of backs: Jerry O'Connell, we did not need to see that portion of your anatomy. In fact, the entire hosting team and crew needs replacing. They're all creeps. And men: Shave. You really don't look sexy. You look like you're lazy, with dirty faces.

True it's a risk but these people are vetted for being basically sensible and physically fit. If they were willing to let people be 20 feet away from lions on Survivor Africa I don't think they're going to let some dangerous tides stop them.

Wasn't sad to see Geo leave, but too bad to see the knowledge is power advantage leave the game.

Lions in Africa are still above ground, and not in the water. There have been people on Survivor who can't even swim, so that definitely puts them at risk of drowning a lot faster, no matter how physically fit they might otherwise be.
