Keep in mind that John apparently never knew his wife was a hunter...John picked up all that stuff without her help. At least, that's how it's always been portrayed.

He did. He also spent some time ruminating and obsessed but mostly in the dark. He didn't really understand what happened until he visited Missouri Mosley.

If you take the origin comic an canon Azazel then led him around for a while after that, baiting him into becoming a hunter.
