Supernatural4x13 "Afterschool Special" SPOILERS discussion thread

Well last night we kicked ass in the ratings. With preliminary numbers at 3.575 we have the 2nd highest rated episode of this season.

We scored higher then any episode in season three.

We scored higher then all but one episode of the 2nd seasons Jan -May episodes (it had a 3.58), but we scored higher demo numbers then they anything they got in Jan -May of the 2nd season.

For a Jan episode we have to go back to Jan 17 2006 during tis first season for a higher viewer total.

Finals are out 3.565 million viewers a 1.6 in adults 18-49 and a 1.5 in adults 18-34.

That's offically the 2nd best performance this season. Its the best Spring (Jan-May) performance since its 1st season. Overall 5th best performance since airing on the CW.

Haven't posted in these threads for a long while but I still never miss an episode of Supernatural.

Really enjoyed this one and I agree with those who mentioned that this one had an air of "Season 1" about it (which is no bad thing).

That precredits sequence has to be one of the most shocking the show has ever done and I liked that it was a case of "salt and burn the remains" method of disposal, which is a method I haven't seen them use on the show for a while now.

I though teenage Dean and Sam were well cast. Teenage Sam did a great job of staying consistent with Jared's character while Teenage Dean was exactly as he should have been; Jensen Ackles' Dean but without the four seasons of character development he's undergone through the show

but the best thing about this episode had to be Dean's reaction to seeing the Jock passed out on top of Sam at the end (Jensen's expression at that second was priceless!)

'He's givin' ya' the full "cowgirl"'

That made me laugh

Great episode

That was very funny. And its the type of humor that I think the show does exceptionally well. Humor without taking them out of character,.

And yeah the casting this season has been (with two exceptions in my opinion) without a doubt a huge bright spot.

This episode did feel a bit like a first season episode, but what sets it apart is three things. Sharper dialogue, better across the board acting and casting, and the writers truly nailing these two characters.

Finally got around to watching this episode tonight without reading any spoilers beforehand. For me, this is the BEST episode of the season!!
Great character development that can have great payoffs later in the angel/demon story arc! Great casting of the young Sam and Dean!! Just wish they coulda nailed the recast of Ruby as well as they did these two!
Loved Dean's crack about the guy ridin' Sam full cowgirl!! Didn't see that one coming after all the angst of the scene. It was so in character for Dean!!

I thought it was a fairly average outing. Many of the plot points were predictable (who else guessed it was the bully right from the start?), but all in all not a bad filler. Why did the gay gym teacher not let them play dodge ball before Dean arrived (other than the obvious whiny asian kid)? Dd Sam really kill the bus driver? I'm not a regular watcher so I don't know what their guns are loaded with.

Best episode? Nah, the one with the oversized, beer drinking, porn watching teddy takes that cake.

This was a good one and I really enjoyed the flashbacks. The whole episode had a sad tone to it which I thought was interesting and probably necessary at this point.

Usually the guns are loaded with rock salt (salt is said to repel spirits) so a direct shot wouldn't kill a human but it would still hurt like hell. Sam actually shot Dean with a rock salt loaded shotgun in the first season episode "Asylum" so it's unlikely to do any lasting damage (though I imagine it would sting quite a lot)

That was good but for me the high point this season is still "In the Beginning"

I have a whole lotta love for "In the Beginning", just hit so many right notes. Sure I missed Sam, but the impact on that character was in so much of the episode.

Thats the episode where Castiel sends Dean back to the 70's to witness what Azazel did to Sam.

Dean thinks he is there to stop Azazel, but it is really to give Dean insight on what happened to Sam, and that they (God and the Angels) don't really know what Azazel's plans actually were.

Both Dean and Sam pretty much assumed that his influence on Sam ended with his death. Of course, even without that direct threat, they have had to deal with his repercussions from the demon world.

So it was cool to see how all the hints played together in one neat little package.

That's a shame you missed it. It's the second best episode of the entire series. It literally tied everything that came before it together. Gut wrenchingly sad. :(

I don't think I would rate it that high. For myself probably between 4-8.

I know I like In My Time of Dying (what an absolutely beautiful episode) more, What Is and What Shall Never Be (or whatever the title is, but another showcase for Jensens amazing talents), Born Under A Bad Sign (I am not sorry that I fucking love that episode, plus no Ruby and hell JO was fucking awesome, Jo who would have thought, and Jared's real time to shine). It's probably after that, but give me a few more months to better gauge how I feel about it.

I would have liked Fresh Blood more (except for its soft teaser, its only weak area), Night Shifter, Jus in Bello, Faith, are also high up there for myself.

I liked it, but I didn't love it. The character work was good, the casting was excellent. But it was all just a little too predictable for me.

I don't know... this season hasn't been blowing me away for some reason. I realise I'm probably in the minority on that. Not saying I dislike it by any means, it's still a hell of a lot better than most of what's on TV. But for whatever reason, it took me two weeks to get around to watching this episode - I was in no particular rush.

Maybe it's because my boyfriend has taken to watching it with me, and he has a tendency to deconstruct everything about it with a more cynical eye than me.

After watching the preview for next week know what I just realized. During the two parter there was all the hoopla that Sam is having sex with a corpse, which yeah is true (though I bet have those who complained didn't during Buffy or Angel). Yet what I realized is that everyone since the start of season three is having a sex with corpse Sammy. And now of Course corpse Dean.

None of those are the case, IIRC. The body Ruby is wearing is comatose, but not dead. And Sam and Dean may have both died, but they did not remain dead. So they're not corpses.

Ruby's body was vegetative, not comatose, and not dead but required life support. She swooped in just in the nick of time to save it. Then, in I know What You Did Last Summer she left it "rotting on the floor" so that she could get a message to Sam and Dean. Without Ruby to keep the body alive, it died, but she's still able to keep it from decomposing and we don't know if Sam has had sex with Ruby since then.
