Supernatural to definitely end in 2010, but...

With competent writers (and a real budget--a big obstacle on the floundering CW) and the right casting, an old West version of Supernatural could be great. Not that I think the CW is capable, but it would be great.

Hey, with 2 days to go until its release, Supernatural Season 4 is #3 on the bestsellers' list at amazon.com. That's the overall/general bestsellers' list, not just the sci-fi/fantasy list. It'll hit number one. I don't think Supernatural DVDs have ever hit #1 on the general best seller list at amazon. This season will.

First of all, never underestimate th power of money on actors. Even if the leads do leave I think CW will continue with the show because they have nothing better. They will make the elads sexy women who fight topless and go to high school.

End the Winchester story, do a spinoff set in the Wild West about the first Campbell hunter(s). :techman:

I've always wanted to know more about the show's Samuel Colt and what put him on to the supernatural world. Any western Supernatural must somehow feature him.

Unfortunately, that's probably true. As desperate as the CW is, they'll opt for the sixth season with or without Kripke. Maybe the final season should all be from Ben Edlund's psychotic mind. Do any of you realize that Cathryn Humphris, who wrote for SPN last year, is now a story editor on Mad Men from AMC? As in emmy nominated and acclaimed Mad Men? They raided Supernatural's closet to get a new editor. Bad for SPN, but impressive nonetheless.

Maybe Kripke should pull a JMS a say 'no more'.

:)
can he get away with that? if Jared & Jensen stay on, wont theCW just go out and find another producer?

take away all 3, Kripke, Jared & Jensen and that might force theCW to drop the show, but not just Kripke

Executive Producers don't have a say when a show ends. Period. That is solely the domain of the studio executives.

As to Supernatural's place on the CW its done decent total viewers, but it has been Both this last season and the season before the lowest performer in the 18-34 demo of any of the shows that got renewed (hell 2 years ago it was also the lowest performer in the 18-49 demo group even though it was the 2nd most watched scripted show).

What that means is that even shows like 90210 actually generated more cash for the CW during its original episodes then Supernatural. It isn't a big revenue generator for the CW. Now it does do well on DVD (the CW's 2nd strongest seller), and it does well overseas) so that generates revenue for Warners.

So yes I can see the CW (if the ratings hold or only drop marginally) keeping the show around another year. But unless the show takes off dramatically in the ratings (and I mean huge), then the CW will be happy to let the show go at the end of the actors contracts. Because they wont be able to up their checks to such a degree that might tempt them both to stay. It just wont happen.

Both actors do love the show, love the crew, and love the characters. Thats never been a problem. But they are both tired on living 9 months out of the year in Canada away from friends and family. Both want to be free to try other jobs (even if they don't get them), and they are both tired of the very long hours they work each week. For both of them this job has been their longest job and, for both of them its required the most time on set of any job they have ever had.

Now if the CW wanted to give the series a open ending, I would love to see an occasional tv movie (which wont happen). or even a miniseries (4 to 6 hour event, which also wont happen). But I think those are the only two options that these two actors would ever, ever agree to continue past a 6th season.

I know that moved really surprised me. I mean the genre's are so different.

I mean Raelle Turner and True Blood, that I can see (though I still think are show is better written).

Yeah Kripke (or any Head Writer/Creator) don't have the option of doing anything more then to quit. They can't end a show. Hell technically the studios can rewrite every single line of dialogue that a head writer approves for a show (it doesn't happen often, but it has).

Usually if a Head writer quits, the studio might give some guidelines on how open they need to leave the show before they quit. In other words to trying to kill the cast, or anything major like that.

And the head writer knows they better do just that (if asked) because if they don't then word would get out and no studio is ever going to want that person as a head writer.

Part of the job of head writer (or executive producer, sometimes it isn't the head writer) is be the company man. To shape a show (or even aline of dialogue) in a way that the studio wishes.

I wish it were up to Kripke. Alas, mswood speaks the truth about that and about SPN not doing well in the female 18-34 demo (hard to imagine, isn't it?) It doesn't make much money for the network, but it makes a nice chunk of change for Warners studio. Those overseas markets are incredible. But not here. All the female 18-34 Nielsen viewers insist on watching Grey's to this day. Ugh.

you know its hard for me to reply to this without slagging off the female 18-34 demo, I actually dont see why they wouldnt like it, two fairly attractive male leads, at least one of them should tempt there interest, meanwhile its a much smarter show than 90210, and the two brothers are seen having feelings, even if they dont express them in great depth.

It's bizarre. The online fandom is so overwhelmingly female. Yet the Grey's contingent just kills the show in the demo and The Office takes the rest. For some reason I cannot fathom, women find Patrick Dempsey attractive. Dr. McDreamy treating Meredith like a complete ass is still compelling after all these years. Grey's really is garbage of the highest order. Too many people dismiss SPN because it's on the CW. If it's on that network, it must be teen garbage like the other shows.

Well to be fair, even though the CW is garbage, a show like Supernatural wouldn't survive on another network. Maybe Fox. The closest thing NBC, CBS and ABC get to supernatural shows are Ghost Whisperer and Medium. Moonlight didn't last a full season. Anyone even remember American Gothic?

Now rename it CSI: Supernatural... :p

you know I may not understand the female 18-34 demo, and there attitude towards Supernatural, I understand even less how anyone can find Grey's a worth while TV show.

I hope they don't do anything even resembling Buffy or Angel. No fucking cliffhangers! I want closure and I don't really care how it gets done.
