Supernatural Prequel with John and Mary in the works

Nothing ever stays dead. It looks like Jensen Ackles and his wife are pitching a show called The Winchesters to the CW. They have a script commitment, but no green light yet meaning the project could fail like the other two attempts at a spinoff. From what we know so far, it would focus on the early days of John and Mary where they hunt and save the world. That completely flies in the face of all Supernatural lore, but that's what they're going with.

Unfortunately no one mentioned it to Jared and he's not too happy about being left out. Guess they're not so brotherly in real life.

Edit: Just spotted this as well...

Padalecki fired off a third tweet, which has since been deleted, at Robbie Thompson, the Supernatural co-executive producer who will pen the prospective series. “Et tu brute? Wow. What a truly awful thing you’ve done,” it read. “#Bravo you coward.”

Yeah, I know about that, but I didn't want to post it. I don't care about this tabloid shit. Jensen and Jared could be BFFs or they could despise each other more than John hated Azazel. Their personal lives are none of my business.

We got some pretty good stuff with Mary & John's history in the original show, so I'm definitely interested in this. Are the actors the same ones who played them in the flashbacks on Supernatural?

Probably not.

My only hesitation with this idea is that John Winchester was seemingly unaware of the supernatural until Mary was killed by Yellow Eyes. (Granted, I ducked out of SPN midway through season 10.) Is that not the case?

I think so.
It was later revealed that Mary had been a Hunter all her live, with John being her motivation to get out of the family business, until it caught up with her again.

but who knows… they could pull some sort of amnesia stunt at the end.

I'm pretty sure we got some flashbacks with them when they first got together, and he knew about everything that was going on. I thought we even saw them out hunting together.

In the series, Mary's parents were hunters and she worked along side them. The Yellow Eyed Demon, Azazel, killed her parents and John. The demon brought John back, but only on the condition that she not go in her child's room when he eventually comes to visit. John was brought back to life, with no memory of what had happened. In the series, it was made clear that John never knew anything about hunting until after Mary was killed by Azazel.

So how exactly does this happen? Does Mary pull some stunt that erases John's memory of hunting? Does the psychic Missouri show up? I'll check it out, because it's Supernatural but I have some doubts.

Totally doesn't fit with the continuity of the show. I find it hard to get past that. I wonder if there's some "hand-waiving" that fixes it somehow? I'll give it a try but, because of Jensen, but it's a big hurdle to get past.

I just finished Supernatural season 8, so I have to wait a couple of months/ years before I can see the prequel. But I would have preferred a sequel/ spin off instead of another prequel

It is somewhat wild that, out of all the attempts at creating a SPN spinoff over the years, this is the one that makes it.

Given the choice, I would have much rather gotten Wayward Sisters, I liked those characters a lot, and the story set up in the backdoor pilot seemed like it had potential. Didn't they eventually tie up the story in another Supernatural episode?
