Supernatural 6x4 "Weekend at Bobby's" spoiler/discussion thread

I love the Bobby character, so I was pleased to see an episode devoted to his lifestyle; I was almost disappointed to have Sam and Dean show up. Outsmarting Crowley was fantastic (although it might have been nice if he actually lived up to his end of the bargain), and I loved the subplot with the neighbor. "It might be fun to stop by for dinner." Apparently Bobby never learned the importance of timing. :rommie:

All demons were once human. That was established in season 3.

Bobby yelling at the brothers didn't disturb me at all. He's human. He was upset. He doesn't need to be mr. perfect father figure. That gets to be cliché. I like it better this way.

See... that's what I miss by becomming captivated by this fantastic show from season 5 on....

Do you just copy/paste this stuff? WHY do you watch?!

All shows on this board have someone like that. stj and The Master of Orion for BSG, Stewey for Enterprise, stj seems to be heading the same direction with Fringe, and let's not forget all the Star Trek XI trolls ("I saw this movie for the ninth time and found even more things to hate about it!!!!!").

The difference is that startrekwatcher previously liked this show and at times quite a bit. Just because he or she doesn't like it now doesn't mean they shouldn't speak their mind about it.

All people have different opinions.

And hell while I generally don't watch shows that I think have gone off the rails, I freely admit to watching all of heroes and yet the only season I liked was season one. It was like watching a car accident, where you just wonder have to slow down and see how bad it gets.

I watch it for the same reason why I watched ... because at one time I actually really enjoyed the show and was invested in the characters so out of momentum and curiosity of how it will end I continued to watch until the bitter end. Same for SN.

I can't agree on TNG or nBSG. But I agree with the sentiment here for Supernatural.

I did stop watching Heroes, I feel like I'll watch Supernatural to the bitter end.

I also haven't enjoyed the continued increase in adding the lighter comedic elements and a drift towards overt parodying and meta-commentary in recent years in some misguided attempt or edict passed down from CW to morph it into a silly teen scary movie, the repetitive and continued angst between the brothers is growing tiresome at this stage, the stale supernatural beings/plots of the week, the tensionless jeopardy that comes near the end of each episode where you know the guys will be perfectly fine and has become to me the equivalent of the tacked on action quota that was evident in VOY/ENT. It just seems they are futilely grasping at ideas to fuel these last few seasons. Plus Jared's acting hasn't been all that great recently either.

This is extremely similar to how I feel about Supernatural.

And here, here is the big point.

When Dean sold his soul Sam and Bobby worked all the time trying to break it. We have proof in dialogue and actual scenes of them doing this.

Bobby sells his soul and nothing. we have no evidence that either brother has attempted to help him, or even asked if Crowley had returned it.

[...]

So yeah, Bobby has ever reason to read them both the riot act.
Dean's sudden lack of phone etiquette at least partially triggered Bobby's rant. The boys usually do thank Bobby. It felt to me like Dean was written OOC just to set it up. Bobby seemed in-character, but Dean's actions felt like plot devices.

As far as the soul thing goes, good point that we have no evidence either way. For all we know Sam and Dean both offered to help with it and Bobby told them to mind their own damn business. Their failure to at least offer/ask would again seem out of character to me, especially for Dean.

I actually think it makes sense that Dean and Sam haven't offered to help. For Sam, it's just another indication that something is off with him, and, for Dean, it's part and parcel of his taking a year off trying to forget about anything monster-related (not to mention his being a bit of a wreck post-Adam/Lucifer confrontation). Plus, they've always had a tendency to be tunnel-minded, and it's completely in character for Bobby not to have asked for help. In fact, the brothers may have just assumed that Bobby got his soul back. It's not as if we have any evidence that Bobby talked about it.

As for Dean being out of character on the phone: I don't agree. Sure, he's usually a bit more polite, but he was in the middle of a battle and short on time. And, during the latter phone call, he was trying to talk about something that had been bothering him for a while (regarding Sam)...It all seems reasonable to me. *shrugs*

Well my point of view is that I often see kids asking more naturally (and willing to take it) for help from their parents. Then parens asking their children for help.

Bobby has been portrayed as a surrogate father figure, all three characters have admitted this. Not only to the viewer but to the other characters.

So I absolutely can see Bobby not actually asking the guys for help. The episode even pokes a little fun at this, when Bobby has a hard time asking Rufus for help.

As for Dean (I wont talk about the awful fighting scene, because its the one part of the episode I hated) his seeking out help about Sam seemed a little softer then what is typical from Dean, but I have no problem believing it. For me the knowledge that Dean has spent a year with a family indicates that (well unless they have let him be a door mat) that he has been able to open up at least a little more then he would of in previous seasons.

There was something I wanted said in this episode that didn't happen. And it could have either with the captured CRD, or later with Crowley. I wanted to hear Bobby (or either Demon) talk about his knowledge of this subject. Ie bring some mention up that he has already got a head start on this sort of thin (due to the research he did for Sam).

And the other thing that really does need to be addressed is Sam. Either Sam no longer has the ability to harness his demonic powers (which I would really need a good reason for that, even God didn't remove that ability), or a reason why he wouldn't use those abilities in crunch time.

Seriously, tight now Demons must be seriously gunning for him. And it isn't like they sucked all the demons back to hell. They are still out there. He should absolutely be target number one. He should know this. He should know that there might come a time where he has to. THis needs to be addressed. Just as the colt and the knife need to be.

Unless His Infernal Majesty King Crowley I of Hell is keeping the legions of the damned back from attempting to gut the boys. And since souls are now a buyers market it would probably make more sense for the demons to concentrate on gathering more souls than rampaging around the joint like bloody fools.
(I'm assuming that the rest of the WEDs where dusted by the angels/the Winchesters, thus leaving the field open to the REDs to take over the running of the pit).

It'll be interesting to see what Hell's gameplan is considering that the angels are either fighting a civil war or becoming high powered arms dealers.Plus there's all the monsters on the lose as well...

(am I the only glad to see Crowley in charge? Seems like the demons got some big ideas:mallory:)

well since Dean's been hiding out and since demons can't track him, he should be ok. Sam was actively hunting thus leaving a trail to follow, though like Dean both can't be traced through mystic means.

Bobby on the other hand should be in serious trouble as demons should no his location. I wouldn't be surprised if Dean left the colt or the knife (or both) to Bobby. I would make practical sense.

Hilarious episode. I would love to see some webisodes dealing with Bobby between seasons if there's going to be a 7th. He's always been one of my favorite characters.

Woodchipper trumps... pretty much everything.

By the way, I don't know if I ever mentioned this, but Bobby appears in Larry Blamire's recent film Dark And Stormy Night, his spoof of "Old Dark House" films. Blamire is the guy who did Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra, its sequel Lost Skeleton Returns Again, Trail Of The Screaming Forehead and the Tales From The Pub series on YouTube. All are highly recommended. Jim Beaver is hilarious in Dark And Stormy Night. :bolian:
