Supernatural 6x13 "Unforgiven"

:cardie: Well that was a grim ending. Totally earned, though. Sam used Roy as bait without him understanding. It's entirely his fault what happened to him, and he made more monsters out of the girls he kidnapped. Sam's got a body count.....and I agree, it was him, Part of him. Most interesting philosophical question.

It was a nice touch that Samuel asked for "English, please" when Sam mentioned using a GPS tracker on Roy. The man died in 1974.

Terrible CGI at the end, though. You can tell the CW doesn't have shit for budget.

Poor Sam. I understand what Dean is trying to do. He's trying to make Sam feel better by separating his brother from the soulless machine he used to be. But I'm with Sam. Soul or no soul, that man was him. It wasn't like he was possessed by a demon or taken over by some monster. Soulless Sam was still Sam just minus the soul. And I like that we get to explore some of the consequences of Soulless Sam's actions this episode right after Sam's re-souling and I think it won't be the last time we'll come across them. I also think Sam is getting an inkling that redeeming himself of the things he's done in the past year will be easier said than done.

Of course it isn't like he was possessed. But I keep saying this how would any of them act without any moral compass. Not just much of one, but literally none. You have a goal, you do anything and everything to get meet that goal. Any of them would do that. Dean in hell still had his soul (sure it took years for him to break), but it was his soul put through the meat grinder. And no what unlike Sam he actually asked for it. Sam made a choice to go to the deepest darkest pit in hell (and that was all him), but he had absolutely no say in being brought back in the condition he was in. None.

Even in our legal system, if you knowingly take something to impair your judgment you can beheld legally accountable. But how does the law treat people who were drugged without their knowledge or consent?

One of the things I liked so much about last week's episode is Sam getting Dean to admit that if it was him he would feel guilt and the need to make amends.

The funny thing is that Sam actually acts more like the Angels then anyone else. As Demons feel (apparently) quite gleeful in deliberately inflicting pain. While angels just do what they have to to reach their goals.

I find it interesting that the one of the biggest "What the Hell" is wrong with my bother moments is when he like Castiel is quite willing to torture a child.

Well both characters are right.

Dean is right in saying that Sam wouldn't have ever done those things if he had his soul. And I think we can all agree with that. Sure Sam would let someone volunteer to be bait, and he certainly would give the coup if he was asked (or if he literally had to). And he certainly will take down a cop if he needs to not be apprehended. All of these things he has done, and I am very curious if the writers deliberately showcased things we have seen Sam do and then seeing how Soul less Sam handles it.

And also Sam is right, its his body and his mind that is making the choices and performing the actions. And his reactions and feelings about it are very valid. He's the guy who's drugged (and again not by his choice) who goes out and runs over an innocent. Even if you weren't in your right mind (and even if you weren't aware you were impaired) you are still going to feel remorse for the actions you took.

I really liked this episode, I also liked the ending. I truly didn't expect to see Sam having near immediate reactions. So far this season hasn't drug its feet much at all.

And yes the effects were crap.

I have no idea how to judge to whole "am I responsible for my body's acts while my soul was in the pit?" discussion. We have no basis to decide in either direction. *shrugs*

Good episode.

This felt like a MOTW episode from the first season. It has been a really long time since we got normal Sam. Jared Padalecki is really great at the role.

We are about halfway through the season now, and they really need to develop the Big Bad, whoever that is going end up to be.

I agree with everyone that the visual effects for Hell were bad. This show doesn't have the budget for it, so they shouldn't even try. The writers should just have ended the episode with Sam holding his head in pain and collapsing onto the ground. That would have been a better cliffhanger.

Man, I wish this show had even half the budget it really needs.

I really enjoyed this episode. Padalecki did a good job expressing Sam's confusion and remorse as the storyline unfolded. To be honest, at first I thought this was going to be a purely un-supernatural episode like "The Benders," where the deputy at the beginning is luring Sam back to town.

It was decent episode--not great--but it was still loads better than most of the episodes this season. I think the last one I enjoyed was "Live Free or TwiHard".

The episode went over pretty well worn material storywise that I've seen elsewhere--heck they even did a shout out to Days of Our Lives where stuff like this was done all the time(a soap I enjoyed tremendously in the late 80s and all of the 90s but nowadays sucks)

I've given up expecting an interesting supernatural plot anymore--it just isn't going to happen. The Arachne was just a monster plot device. That just leaves the character stuff which was fair but didn't grab me in a way--again when you just recycle stories and plug in your characters it is hard not to remember a similar story I'd seen before with characters I enjoyed more executed in a more entertaining way than this episode. And even the character material wasn't particularly fresh either but then my investment in the brothers has dwindled since earlier seasons. Still it very well maybe the 2nd best episode this season and it was magnitudes better than what I watched on Fringe last night but I'm sooooooooo not looking forward to the alternate universe breaking of the fourth wall extravaganza in two weeks--I hate those episodes with the exception of "The Monster at the End". I may go back to watching SN first and then Fringe on Saturdays given how it isn't all that great either. Man tv really is unimpressive these days.

A B.
