Spoilers "Superman & Lois" Season 2

So she kissed a girl, but did she like it? :)
I immediately thought of that. Guess no one wanted to pay to use the song.

I thought Supergirl should have done the Death of Superman storyline, but from her perspective - maybe back in season three. A season of "He dies, she still relatively inexperienced as a superhero, is forced to pick up where he left off until Kal-El is revived."

I thought this episode was okay but mostly just existed to inch the plot along. Also, the revelations in this episode were already telegraphed from the last episode (for example, Sarah kissing a girl at camp). I really hate it when secrets are kept for the purpose of stretching out a plot line as long as possible and this is one of those times.

I wonder if Cryer’s Lex is the person at the other end of the phone call at the end..

I feel like this episode was setting up Morgan Edge turning "good" and helping Clark fight what is presumably Doomsday. There were a lot of hints with the talk of Clark's kryptonian mom wanting to see her two sons work together, saying she still sees good in him, Clark saying he hopes so. I think it is possible that we will see a redemption arc for Morgan Edge this season.

Not Loki.

Mixed feelings this week. It's nice to give Clark a chance to connect with Lara in a sense, and maybe begin a redemption arc for Tal-Rho. But I've never really liked the whole "holographic ghost in the Fortress" angle. It never existed in the Superman mythos until the Reeve movies, and the adaptations over the past couple of decades have really overused it. Plus the movies and Smallville never really explained just what Jor-El's "ghost" was, whether it was a computer simulation, his actual consciousness, or what. Okay, later productions have explained better that these are AI programs based on memory engrams and the like, but my distaste for the concept was already set by that point. Also, Supergirl's Alura hologram was presented as basically a nonsentient expert program with limited responses, but S&L depicts its holograms as fully sentient, which seems like pushing the concept too far to me.

Technically Lara is the latest Arrowverse character to be recast for S&L, but she only appeared briefly in the opening of the Supergirl pilot, so it hardly counts.

Lana running for mayor was predictable, but what I want to know is, when she and Kyle were considering candidates for mayor, why wasn't Clark Kent on the top of their list? You'd think he'd be the obvious choice, an admired, unquestionably honest, universally liked native son. Of course he'd have to turn it down, being busy enough with other responsibilities, but you'd think they would've at least thought of him. There should've been a line explaining why they ruled him out. (Or Lois, but I guess she's less popular in Smallville.)

The several attempts to adapt it have left me cold as well, but an ongoing show may be the place that can get it right. The Doomsday fight in Death of Superman was just a big fight to get to the heart of the story: Funeral for a Friend with the world and supporting cast mourning Superman showing his importance, then Reign of Superman with the mystery of how he was being brought back. The movies have all had to give those elements short shrift due to time constraints, but a TV show can let that breathe far easier.

Honestly, I'm not that interested in seeing that story either. I feel that serialization has made TV heroes too self-absorbed, too fixated on their own personal problems rather than helping other people with their problems, which was more the focus in the episodic era. Superman most of all should be other-directed rather than self-directed. I want him to be the one helping, not the one needing help.

Plus, as I said, how the heck do you do a storyline where the show's lead actor is "dead" for weeks? You'd have to keep Hoechlin around somehow, and yeah, I guess you could go the impostor angle, but then the show isn't telling stories about Superman and Lois, which is literally the title of the show. Hard to build a show around relationship drama when a key figure in most of the show's relationships is missing. And I just don't want Superman/Clark to be absent for that long, certainly not when we're only in the second of this show's short seasons.

It's almost a shame the show feels as disconnected from the wider CWverse as it does, as it'd be great to feel the effects on the characters in the other shows.

Hmm, yeah... I could see it working as one of their week-long crossover events, if they still had as much interconnection as they used to. It would've been good to show how the other heroes had to compensate for Superman's absence, except they never managed to establish a version of the post-Crisis world where Superman's presence had any real importance to the other shows.

Could have easily ruled out Clark by saying Smallville had a requirement that the Mayor had to have residency in town for the past # years.

I liked how we all guessed it was a girl she kissed rather than a guy. Hollywood is getting rather predictable with their story tropes. :)
I also thought that the mayor story was leading to Lana asking Clark but that would be too high profile for him. He wouldn't be able to be Superman as much. Plus that’s Oliver’s schtick.

I'm not curious about the specific reason, I'm just saying it would've made sense to offer some onscreen reason why they didn't consider Clark. Speculating about it after the fact doesn't correct its absence within the actual show.

Or maybe it's just that when you outgrow heteronormative assumptions, one possibility is just as likely as the other. If anything, we were overdue for at least one same-sex relationship in this show. That's not "predictable tropes," it's just normalizing realistic diversity.

Same sex relationships are still a small percentage of the population. Not every show needs one.
Now I wonder what the connection Clark has with this creature? Surely it’s not another brother. :)

"Needs?" It's part of everyday life, including the lives of many people in the audience. How dare you say they don't deserve to see themselves represented as much as you do?

I can see that happening though they’d probably kill him in a battle with Doomsday. Redemption arcs seem to end that way most of the time.

I think that was Anderson on the other end of the phone call. I don’t really trust that guy.

Also I wonder if Anderson’s Supermen will end up fighting Doomsday and get wiped out. The JLA fought Doomsday so these guys could replace them in that battle.

That was the problem: it was all so predictable.

Yeah, I posted that theory as well, and that would be the only true surprise, instead of Faulkner's benefactor being Anderson, or even Sam Lane (for another "betrayal" shocker). Of course, if this series is set many years after Lex's last appearance on Supergirl, it would give enough time for Luthor to escape, return to earth and plot (as the Kent children were growing up), so there would not need to be some great explanation about his being the string-puller of some established company.

Hollywood is getting rather predictable with their story tropes.

Yes, for so many ideas that where the result of the copy+paste mentality..

Lex is still in the phantom zone. I don’t think they will be using him this season.

This is why I mentioned Lex having enough time, since this series has to be several years ahead of Supergirl if one uses the ages of the Kent boys as a marker (at the time Supergirl ended, wasn't he still single?). That would have provided Lex with enough time to escape and begin to re-build his world/ plot.

The Kent children (plural) are a result of Crisis on Infinite Earths. On the old Earth, Lois and Clark had been married for a little while and had one baby who'd just been born, but on the new Earth, they had two sons of an undisclosed age (who we now know were teenagers). Apparently, based on the Diggle crossover cameos, the S&L one came before the SG one, just as we saw when we were watching them, so the shows are set in the same timeframe.

I’ve been watching a lot of Smallville recently and I think they should bring back John Glover as Lionel Luthor. He was always more intimidating
