News Superman & Lois Ordered to Series at The CW

Earth 38's memories are jumbled up inside Earth Prime Superman.

That nicotine Kryptonite from Superman 3, will probably pull him right out of the other one.

I have three thoughts on this...

1, Superman Prime requested to have all his Earth 38 meories deleted.

2, This is PreCrisis. End of Superman and Lois season 1, there will be red skies, and this Superman is going to be eaten by Superman 38.

3, The Earth 38 memories were forcibly deleted, because Clark kept trying to rescue his real cousin and the other doppelgangers of the paragons that had had their "real" personalities deleted. Think about it, there's this freak running around pretending to be his cousin, to his face even though they both know that she is a freak who murdered the real Kara.

Why build a universe for this show and then ignore it.

It's not Earth 38, because Kal didn't have kids, and it's not Earth Prime because Kal was a Paragon assassin who assassinated his doppelganger and stole that guys wife and kids.

So where the frakk is this set?
Remember the entire universe was recreated in their crisis on infinite Earths. Many realities were combined and that definitely happened as Supergirl and Flash now always existed on the same Earth.

The only reason the heroes who weren't involved with the crisis remember the past was due to the Martian Manhunter going around and restoring everyone's memories of the original multiverse.

So yes it's not the same Earth or multiverse that it was prior to the crisis on infinite Earths.

How do you read the scene in Legends where Clark forgets that he has children?

Hey nobody said The Specter was perfect. I mean Oliver Queen can only be so omnipotent, right?;)
(And hey to be fair to the writers, there was a lot in the DC comics universe that was still a mess after the first Crisis On Infinite Earths - so why should the TV interpretation of it be all that different?)

Well the ratings are in... complete disaster. With a character with the clout of Superman you'd expect the best debut in CW history, or at least the best superhero debut... Not even close. Just 1.71 million, well below the premiere of freaking Walker Texas Ranger (2.44 million). It was the highest rated CW premiere since the long days of... ahhhh... 2019 when Batwoman premiered... Batwoman, one of the worst shows OF ALL TIME according to IMDB. Honestly not sure if this show will get a second season with a debut like this... I think the era of superheroes on TV has come to a close.

As for the show itself... going to be hard for the other shows to cross over with it. Completely different tone, and more importantly, completely different quality of cinematography.

I think Disney might take issue with the idea that the age of comic book heroes on tv might be over.see

You forgot to mention that the S&L premier drew the biggest audience that its time slot has had on CW in two years [https://tvline.com/2021/02/24/tv-ratings-superman-and-lois-cw-premiere/].

That sounds like the opposite of complete disaster.

And who cares what IMDb cares about Batwoman?

Also, again, broadcast ratings are only part of the picture, and a diminishing one at that. It doesn't surprise me at all that more people watched Walker than Superman, as the Walker audience is probably older on average, and thus doesn't use streaming as much as younger audiences.

It's true.
During the pandemic especially, EVERYTHING is about streaming. Disney+, HBO, Paramount+, that's what they're chasing now, not the dinosaurs watching network television live.

Yeah, I missed the broadcast premeier, (8/7 central got me again). I watched it the next day on the CW app.

I know this has been talked about in other places before but could it be that people just want to watch episodic television?

People prefer to watch something where they don't need to know 10 seasons of backstory to understand something?
For this very reason, I hope S&L continues to be minimally connected to the other Arrowverse shows (especially since I have stopped watching most of them as of this season). Shared universes generate a lot of storytelling clutter that isn’t desirable if you’re just interested in one particular show or character. Though I would be happy to see Kara or other characters from Supergirl show up, since they’re legitimately and closely related as part of the “Superman family.”

They never had a show with a character as big as superman (Smallville doesn't count, less interesting concept). I expected largest cw ratings ever, not just 2 years behind the batwoman flop.

As I mentioned in the other thread, you could have Superman/Batman flashbacks with Batwoman's Warren Christie as Bruce Wayne. That would be a way to have subtle continuity with the Arrowverse without any explicit plot threads connecting, since it's just an actor in common.

Eh, the simpler explanation is just that more people watch cbs. Supergirl had much higher ratings on cbs than on cw.

I am not too surprised by the low ratings; a number of factors might be at play--one, Superman has been--almost consistently--in a film or on TV guest appearances for a number of recent years, so the novelty of another Superman production may have worn out. Two, audiences familiar with the Berlanti/CW way of handling most DC characters (not good) may have turned off a number of potential viewers who have grown sick and tired of the CW's approach. Three, there are fans of the character who never supported Hoechlin cast as Superman, so that's another part of the audience that was not going to watch.

...and about Walker: Texas Ranger? I think it had a stronger performance because the original has become such a beloved series in reruns, that a reboot would attract many a curious viewer. Whether or not those ratings hold steady or tick upward is another matter.

I think the era of superheroes on TV has come to a close.

That might be true; the majority of the CW-DC shows were never that great to begin with, and turned off many comic book fans. With Berlanti and Co. having planted their heels with what they feel are necessary ingredients for making a superhero show, they have left audiences with few options--other than to bail. The low ratings seem to indicate that. Regarding streaming superhero series, the Disney+ Marvel shows have/will have the benefit of essentially serving as content feeders / backstories to the next movie phase, so that gives them some protection from superhero fatigue / disinterest.

As for the show itself... going to be hard for the other shows to cross over with it. Completely different tone, and more importantly, completely different quality of cinematography.

That's true, and its one of its best assets.

Eh, the simpler explanation is just that more people watch cbs. Supergirl had much higher ratings on cbs than on cw.

Arguably, its lone CBS season was its best, hence the numbers it earned.

Supergirl had a higher budget on CBS for sure... whether that actually matters to people for TV shows is unclear. Some of the CW shows are pretty cheap, but had decent ratings (years ago).

Interesting thing is that if Supergirl came out today, it'd certainly go to Paramount+, where it would likely be deemed a success, and she'd never join the Arrowverse...

Eating a 3 million dollar licensing fee per episode was just insane.

60 million dollars a year just to be allowed top use the name.

They could have gotten Powergirl for a couple 6 packs and a cheese burger, per episode.
