Superman (casting, rumors, pix till release)

Man of Steel had a huge opening day in the UK. From The Hollywood Reporter:

Notably, the 3D movie -- starring British actor Henry Cavill -- grossed $5.2 million in the U.K., pacing ahead of blockbuster Iron Man 3 to score the best opening day of 2013 so far. Man of Steel captured 70 percent of the market and performed on par with last year's superhero extravaganza The Avengers.

In terms of other superhero pics, Man of Steel came in 88 percent ahead of The Amazing Spider-Man, 11 percent ahead of Iron Man 3 and 17 percent ahead of The Dark Knight.

Man of Steel II speculation

Luthor retro-engineers his battlesuit from Kryptonian tech. Zod's armor reminded me of Lex's battlesuit from the 80s.

Well, I can see Luthor appearing in the sequel but not as the main threat to Earth or to Superman. These guys can certainly find a more sophisticated way to use him - a number of writers for the comics have, after all, in the last thirty years.

An idea I had for a sequel, after Superman Returns, involved Brainiac and Metallo. Brainiac providing the smarts and Metallo the muscle. I figure that would work for a Man of Steel sequel as well.

I just hope if Luthor is in the sequel he has some shuckster real-estate scam planned. We don't see that side of Luthor enough.

Luthor would have a hard time topping Zod's real estate scheme in this one....

I could see him making use of Kryptonian technology and/or taking advantage of the state of affairs at the end of this film in any numbers of ways, but a more modern version of Luthor wouldn't be wearing the battlesuit himself.

Well we already saw the LexCorp trucks, so it seems pretty clear that they're going for that version of the character.

Although I have to admit..... after L&C, STAS ,and the comics of the last 20 years, I'm frankly kind of bored with that version of the character as well.

I hate Real Estate Luthor as well. I've always wondered if on some level it wasn't intentional parody of "Build A Giant Robot To Rob Banks Luthor" from the old comics - a supposed world-class genius whose ambitions were laughably picayune.

Byrne's rethinking of the character as a narcissist who used his extraordinary gifts to make himself incredibly wealthy, successful and effectively beyond the reach of the law most of the time has always seemed the most credible version and remains my favorite.

Luthor the business tycoon, more akin to Lionel from Smallville... The devil in a suit and tie. No over the top, please no giant islands of kryptonite >.< .

Tho i do hope we see kryptonite in the next one, its an iconic part of the mythos, and as a collectors item, replicas are as close to an item from that universe as one can get.

If Luthor is used, then I demand Christina Hendricks be cast as Miss Tessmacher because…well, just because.

To give credit where it's due, I recall reading somewhere that corporate Luthor was more Marv Wolfman's brainchild.

How long are we going to keep this thread around for now that the review and discussion thread has been around for a few days? There's not going to be really any more news or anything regarding this film? Unless we're keeping this for a non-spoiler review thread or something?
We could always keep this going as the news thread for the sequel.

As for Lex Luthor...

Got back from it and absolutely loved the film! This actually exceeded my already high expectations, and want to see it again already. I'll do a review of it in the other thread in a while but yes...just was fantastic.

I think we'll get the corporate tycoon Lex myself in the next one as well.
