Actually what most fanboys consider hot usually leaves me cold. They always seem to want one of these generic model types who looks like they stepped out of Maxim, who has a nice body and attractive face-- but nothing remotely original or distinctive about them whatsoever.

As far as I can tell, "hot" means "she gives me wood." It's completely subjective.

-1. If we are talking about a down to earth movie I would say looks aren't important but i'm one of those "conditioned" people who expects a good looking chick for the Superhero whether or not said Superhero is shallow. He deserves hotness to match his coolness.

Hot's subjective. Witness folks complaining abut Margot Kidder, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scarlett Johansson, Anne Hathaway...well just about any actress cast in a superhero movie.

I must say that I wasn't that attracted to Margot Kidder either.
I think you are right saying that hot is subjective but I think in some cases like this it can be held as a general opinion. I'm not saying she isn't attractive but just missing something. But I think if they do like 'Superman: The Movie' and get the relationship to work and make us love her character it doesn't matter.

I love Maggie Gyllenhaaal, Scarlett Johansson is pretty much a goddess and Anne Hathaway can be quite lovely.

Margot Kidder? Never bought for a moment she was a Lois Lane. She didn't have the look and her raspy chain-smoking voice was hardly doing her any favors. It was hard to see what Superman would like in her and if we can't see that then it's hard to really buy into the relationship.

Margot Kidder was a terrible Lois Lane.

As said above, I think Teri Hatcher probably had the right balance between looks, being spunky and being a strong-willed "modern woman." It was easy to see why Superman would like her, it was easy to see why Clark would be interested in Lois on Smallville or even in Superman: Returns.

Margot Kidder? Couldn't buy it for a moment.

Why not? She wasn't superhot. She was normal. Even more flawed than any heroin in any movie I've seen, from her raspy voice to her sarcastic nature where she frequently put Clark and others like him down even as she complimented them. Superman loved her because he saw the person she really was inside. He was able to bore through all the layers that made her unappealing. That's what makes Supes great, he can do that with everyone.

Agreed. I love how Donner doesn't have Superman go for the hottest woman in the building in his movie, but a girl who is actually kind of a flawed, distracted, chain-smoking mess. It's a great, unexpected touch, and somehow Reeve and Kidder's chemistry totally makes it work.

I think the biggest problem is just those awful 70's outfits and hairstyles she got stuck with. Even for the time period, they were ugly as hell.

As I think about it I really don't think she is ugly. It's just that smoking is one of the biggest turn offs that I know and there are a few scenes with her babbling with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth that just renders me disgusted.

She did the part very well. Coming from the George Reeves 'Adventures of Supermen' perspective, I never pictured Lois for her physical beauty, but for her 'take no prisoners' attitude, rather than 'woman as coffee bearer' for the hero more frequently seen when I was a kid. My qualm with Kidder's Lane was in scripting as she often came off less smart than I prefer Lois to be.

That's uncalled for. There's a distinct difference between genuine ugliness and someone who doesn't appeal to you. There are lots of types that don't appeal to me, but I'd never call them ugly let alone hideous.

I love how Henry looks in the costume...and am glad we're getting Lana in the film.
