Superman (casting, rumors, pix till release)

He looks a bit like a Curt Swan Superman in this one.

They could have gone the Batman '89 route...have the movie establish the character early in his career, but only lightly touch upon the origin.

"Early"? it was the start of his career wasn't it? It's been a while since I've seen that film but it's an origin story isn't it?

we see his first appearance as Batman, his motivation and also he gets revenge on the man who killed his parents. it's a classic origins story.

It's not an origin story in the traditional sense. Also, I'm not convinced we see his first appearance as Batman.

Zack looking an awfully like Mark Ruffalo these days. Thats awesome though JA! Too bad you couldn't get that close to Nolan.

We all know he's got a 100 ft restraining order from Nolan.

For real? Or are you guess just giving him a hard time?

Honestly, he looks more like Superman as drawn by the majority of artists than Christopher Reeve did.

Yep.

The crooks he beats up in the first part of the movie are talking about "The Bat" when he shows up, so yeah, its not his first appearence.

I am a huge fan of Christopher Reeve as Superman. But this is an excellent point. There is this myth that he looked like Swan's artwork. But that is far from the truth. Chris had a very prominent nose and uniquely distinct facial structure. So much so that its been very hard to get his likeness right in merchandise.

Considering the extent to which Reeve was admired both for his portrayal and for his own life I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been more influence on the comics. It looked to me like the Johns/Frank "Secret Origins" thing the other year referenced Reeve pretty closely...did the Donner/Johns/Kubert stories that ran for a while after SR?

It's not surprising that Cavil looks like his comic book counterpart since Zack Snyder gave one of his first interviews on the film last October where he stated his favorite artists, among them were Jim Lee and Curt Swan. To me Cavil looks a bit like Secret Origin Clark who of course was drawn by Gary Frank.

^ Really? I flipped through the TPB and thought it was pretty obvious Christopher Reeve was his model for Superman.

Correct. To answer your question Dennis, Gary Frank was also the artist for part of Johns run before "Secret Origin".

I do think likeness seems to be in the eye of the beholder in cases like this. Some George Reeves fans are certain that Curt Swan adjusted his drawing of Superman to look like him during the run of that show. But more likely its due to the fact that Swan drew him as a 'everyman' type. So a lot of different guys within a general range of features could look like his Superman.

Chris Reeve was indeed the inspiration for Frank's Superman, which is kind of my point. Kind of going full circle here in an in direct way.

Actually if anything he looks the spitting image of Christopher Reeve to me, and by extension the image of Superman as depicted by all the Superman artists inspired by Reeve's such as John Byrne. I don't see much of Curt Swan's Superman in him. And by the way, I know he's riding a bike but shouldn't he be wearing glasses, or are these shots of rehearsals?
