Supergirl TV Series is being work on.

I can think of any number of reasons why they don't just use the name Superman when they refer to the character that have nothing to do with not being able to use the name.

Ok I finally watched the whole pilot and for the most part I really really liked it. Contrary to what some others are saying I thought the casting was perfect across the board, and that Benoist gave a great performance all the way through. And this already seems like just as strong and interesting a group of characters as those in the Flash, that should be really fun to watch interact.

The action was really well done and actually pretty thrilling in places, and as I hoped Supergirl looks pretty damn cool flying around and kicking ass (I especially loved how much they integrated her flying into that action, with her constantly trying to use that power to her advantage).

On the other hand the pilot felt extremely rushed.. they sprint through all the corner points (yeah well.. if you're going to watch Supergirl you'll probably know enough about her character so no need for a lengthy introduction and origin story but still). Maybe the pilot would have benefited more from being a two parter and build it up more slowly towards the big reveal.

Well yeah... that was my biggest problem as well. The underlying story was really good, and hit all the right beats, but they just rushed through the whole thing too damn fast. She makes the transition into being a full-blown Supergirl about as quickly as we saw in the 6 minute trailer (over the course of a costume-fitting montage), and next thing you know she's already fighting supervillains and working for the DEO.

I realize pilots nowadays have to work hard to keep the audience's attention, but I still wish they could have stretched things out a lot more than they did, and let the story unfold in a more natural way.

She's Kara's maternal Aunt and is played by Laura Benanti, who also plays Kara's mother Alura.

Yeah that was really odd and confusing to me as well. At first you're thinking "Wow, it's her mother!", which would be a really damn cool twist. But then she keeps referring to Kara as her neice for some reason. Which just makes no sense at all.

How does it not make sense? I think it makes perfect sense, and I haven't even seen the Pilot yet (and won't be until it actually airs, as I've noted previously).

Two-hour pilots seem to have become quite rare these days. I wonder why that is.

Well yeah, I suppose she could just be the mom's twin sister, but it would have been helpful if she made some kind of reference to that fact. And it does seem like something that could be unnecessarily confusing for many people.

The fact that she's played by Laura Benanti - the same actress who plays Alura - should make it pretty obvious that she's an identical twin, as should the whole 'niece' thing.

Heck in this case I think even a 90 minute pilot would have enough to make the story work a bit better.

It would be cool if they took this time to insert some extra scenes (which I know has been done with other pilots in the past), but something tells me that's probably unlikely. And who knows, maybe with all the commercials and stretched out to the full hour as part of a regular broadcast it'll seem less rushed and more just "fun and fast-paced".

As I suggested in my post, I think the onus is on the director. It seems he might of been in over his head.

I wonder if it has something to do with the serial nature of TV these days?

And remember what happened with the Constantine Pilot leak?

It was different to the final product.

A scene was added to boot out the until that moment, intended female lead because she wasn't working out.

Or the Doctor Who leaks last year.

The Sheriff of Nottingham was supposed to have his head cut off with a sword, but since he had a robot body, he just picked his head up and put it back on and kept fighting. Problem was that something typical in the Middle East had happened where some one's beheading was newsworthy and kept in the cycle for far too long until TPTB chickened out and cut the scene because they didn't want to seem exploitative or uncouth to the immediate current events.

The pilot is good, but it's not yet set in stone.

If the running time for the pilot as leaked is around 46minutes then there could be some cuts. Normal run time for a modern program on regular network is around 42 - 43mins.

changing the topic - wonder what their limitations are on the use of Superman in this?

Obviously for story reasons you want to limit his use but I want behind-the-scenes limits there are?

I thought about that too during the pilot.. they never say Superman, only referring to him as he/the big guy/etc and we obviously never see his face (though his costume appears to have the same textured look as Man of Steel).

It might be they keep it back for some sweeps episode and are undecided who to cast if he ever appears full frontal. If they decide to merge the show with the movie(s) it is just a question if they can persuade/pay Henry Cavill though i doubt they'd want to mix the TV and movie universes as they are leading up to Justice League and want certainly bigger names for Flash and others to draw in movie audiences who may not watch the show (though it would be so awesome to see Grant Gustin in a big movie alongside Superman and Batman :techman:).

Is there an embargo on Clark Kent too?

I really did not get the feel that Jimmy was on the boyfriend track. Very attractive, and so tall, but he's too busy being inegmanic and tall... Did I mention how tall he is? The Winn character is way too far into the friends zone to get a date with Kara, but that just makes him Ducky. Desperately in love and ignored. It also might make Winn become a super villain to get her attention? Winn Schott, the name they are using for this kid, is taken form the Superman Villain "The Toyman", so we have that to deal with at some point down the line.

Perhaps. Although watching the pilot a second time, the pacing doesn't seem nearly as bad to me as it did before.

I was also able to pay more attention to the music, and I think the new Supergirl theme works pretty well. It's obviously not as catchy and memorable as the old Supergirl movie theme (which is about the only good thing to come out of that movie), but it's still pretty effective and gets the job done.

I'm hopeful we get at least some kind of opening title sequence to go with it, instead of just a quick flash of the title, but I know that's pretty rare to see nowadays.

I don't see "James" being a love interest...more of a mentor figure, odd as that may seem. (You've come a long way, Jimmy.)

FOX paid Warner Bros./DC an extra licensing fee for unrestricted access to anything and everything having to do with Batman, thus giving Gotham's showrunners the ability to use practically any character(s) they want, and I think the chances are very good that CBS has done the same thing with regards to the Superman/Supergirl property.

I wonder how that works the other way with the Arrowverse using various Batman characters - wonder if it is a case by case basis or just "everyone Batman, Robin and..."

Opening themes are a waste of time.

2 or three minutes to tell us what we know we are watching, and who is always in it every week? Maybe the actors need to be credited for their work, "hey look it's me!" But if you're binge watching, you fast forward through that crap, and really 3 minutes x 22 episodes? That's over an hour of story they're stealing from us for no fricking reason!

A valid economical reason for long opening credits is to make a shorter show without making a shorter show. When I used to tape Enterprise on VHS, without opening or closing credits, it would work out to be 37 minutes of storymatter, which is appalling!

If Enterprise had got rid of the long credits, they would have had three minutes in which they would have sold more advertising, and therefore possibly not been cancelled even though no one was watching. Or three minutes more story which might improve quality, and there for generate more audience and not been cancelled.

Once Upon a Time's Opening Sequence is perfect. It's 5 seconds long and is different every time as a specific portent to the episode that you haven't watched yet... Which can't be cheap?

Oh, but Blame Lost, they started this brief credits thing.
