Spoilers "Supergirl": the 6th and final season

Yeah, this one didn't work for me. At first it seemed that Lena talked Supergirl out of her quite depraved plan, and then suddenly she was on board, and it wasn't clear why. Also, the team's ability to "keep people from getting hurt" during the chaos should've been a lot greater than shown. Supergirl should've been able to race around at superspeed and separate or restrain hundreds of people in a matter of moments. J'onn should've been able to telepathically put a large number of people to sleep. And so on.

Also, Andrea is being written too much as a caricatured bad boss, taking whatever position is most objectionable to the reporters whether it would really make sense from her perspective or not.

It's an unlikely coincidence that Esme would be of the same species at the random fire-breathing guy, so I'm guessing her power is to duplicate the powers of whoever's near her.

Add to the list of dumb stuff in this episode the bit where J’onn phases through the vehicle window to grab the carjacker, but instead of phasing the guy out through the door (as he’s demonstrated the ability to do many times when in physical contact with someone), he yanks the guy through the closed window, causing unnecessary damage to the vehicle and likely injury to the carjacker.

This season (with the exception of three episodes so far by my reckoning) just sucks.

Yeah, that bugged me too. If you're going to save the owner from having her car stolen, why deliberately damage it in the process?

Just in general, the heroes were too violent toward the people they were stopping. These weren't hardened criminals, they were ordinary citizens who'd had their empathy removed. It seemed like the heroes had lost theirs as well.

I enjoyed the contrivance of having the depravity-field emanate from "The National City MMA Festival"(!), so there's at least a fig-leaf for why all these people are proficient in martial arts and are doing awesome flying kicks and blocks while causing general mayhem.

Here he comes to save the daaaayyyyyy! From the synopsis of the October 26 episode:
When Lex Luthor (guest star Jon Cryer) appears by Nyxly’s (Peta Sergeant) side, Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and team must deal with the emotional fallout of facing their two biggest foes at the same time.
By God, at least there'll be one thing worth tuning in for that week. Cryer's Lex is never less than excellent, and he's capable of elevating even weak material.

As noted last week, the showrunners were too transparent with its telegraphing of Lena's empowerment moment as she embraces being a witch, and no matter what insta-power the showrunners give her, she's a novice, but at least she was allowed to screw up....for the wrong reasons, since she listened to Dey's piss-poor analogy about spellcasting and baking (on one's own terms / approach).
Dey's analogy actually helped her figure out how to do it correctly, she just didn't realize it because the Bad Guys were in another country. As a semi-practicing Witch, I liked his analogy. :)

Also, Andrea is being written too much as a caricatured bad boss, taking whatever position is most objectionable to the reporters whether it would really make sense from her perspective or not.

I'm bothered by the caricature that Andrea has become too. It seems a real waste.

Ah! Thanks for your thoughts on Esme! That makes more sense now.

Supergirl - The Final Season
Season 6 - episode 15 - "Hope for Tomorrow"

SG / Alex: One would think SG and Alex would know better than trying to get Esme to understand her powers by overwhelming her with one alien after another with abilities she cannot possibly understand.

Alex going overboard trying to play mother should not be wrapped up in a single episode. Although her making a boatload of promises to the child seems like a set-up of some kind.

Getting rid of nuclear weapons is not changing or interfering with human history, as she's living in unfolding history, which would have no fixed outcome she would be aware of. She's simply a part of the unfolding history.

Nyxlygsptlnz:
The Infinity sag--er...Totems saga continues, and now she even has a device on her wrist to serve as a conduit for the totem's power....

The one good thing about the kidnapping of Dey turned out to be the writers' longstanding agenda unintentionally blowing up in their faces with the following exchange:

Dey: "You don't believe in a free press?"
Nyxlygsptlnz: "mmm-mm."
Dey: "Journalism shines a light on people in power. It insures no authoritarian impulse goes unchecked*. Much like yourself."
Nyxlygsptlnz: "If you think your little newspaper has any impact on those with real power. you're more delusional than I thought. No, the powerful; will always believe their way is righteous."

*..unless the journalist happens to agree with a subject's authoritarian impulse. Yeah...whoops.

The showrunners' journalism fantasies are exactly the kind of high school journalism level of crap that experience in reality has to shake out of those who become serious writers. As noted, the villain made the grounded argument, which flies in the face of the noise pushed by this series from the start.

Kelly: I guess the showrunners wanted to nosedive hard with one Very Special Episode after another--now focusing on Esme, while Kelly felt what about herself? Ah, yes--showrunner racial "look at the statement we're making" has gone up in a puff of smoke, and why not, since Berlanti Productions never had even a mild interest in the life / generational struggles of black people.

J'onn: This guy's talking about an "overreach of power?" As the secretary pointed out, since the end of the DEO, J'onn and his pals have had no trouble intervening in the affairs of others. In fact, that's the one role they have all agreed to play (interventionist "hero"), so he was talking out of his ass.

Lena: The writers are really straining to keep Lena involved, but one can guess this is to have her make a breakout show of magic when her brother shows up. At this point, few would bet against Lena being the one to defeat him while making some speech...and then he escapes, or something along those lines.

NOTES: CG SG, J'onn and the missiles.... There's a number of fan films--with their limited resources--that put this amateur hour crap to shame.

Next week....yeah.

GRADE: D+.

"I'm forbidden to interfere in human history." I'm usually here for a Superman '78 callout, but I'm not sure how this one makes much sense for this character and this continuity. Jor-El wasn't Kara's father. Who exactly did the "forbidding"?

The Superman IV homage was fun, though.

Destroying the hope totem seems incredibly reckless without knowing its potential consequences.

One would think SG and Alex would know better than trying to get Esme to understand her powers by overwhelming her with one alien after another with abilities she cannot possibly understand.

Yeah. Alex and Kelly showed a shocking lack of common sense. They did not even stop to think what might happen if a little 5 year old mimics god like powers like what Supergirl has. All they had to was take a minute to think "if Esme mimics Supergirl's super hearing, what possible sounds might she hear? Hey Supergirl, what kinds of stuff do you hear? Oh, you hear every crime being committed, every car accident? Maybe that not something we want a little 5 year old to hear? Not to mention, what if Esme accidentally mimics heat ray vision? She could accidentally burn the place down or kill someone. They even mention that Kara almost burned the house down when she was young and could not fully control her heat vision power yet. It was really irresponsible IMO. Alex and Kelly are not ready to adopt a little child IMO. But the show just brushes it under the rug with a sappy speech about love and family.

Destroying the hope totem seems incredibly reckless without knowing its potential consequences.

Definitely. And the rational the characters gave about how they can give people hope again if people lose hope, seems naïve. I mean, we saw what happened when just a few people lost their humanity, what do you think could happen if the whole world lost hope? There could mass suicide, reckless crime, wars etc...

On another topic, I am guessing Nyxly's secret admirer is Lex?

I’m not even sure where to start with this episode.. I liked the some of the character interactions I guess.

The whole totem storyline is confusing. Why not destroy them all in the sun? Am I missing something?

Others above have pointed out the problem with having Esme practice Kara’s powers. And now that she has Truth Seeker as a pet, so much for believing in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.

Having Martian Manhunter present at peace talks to keep people calm with his mind seems extremely unethical, whether or not they were affected by the hope totem.

This season feels completely different than everything that came before. Let’s hope Lex turns things around for the final 5 episodes.

The whole totem storyline is confusing. Why not destroy them all in the sun? Am I missing something?

There was a scene that tried to explain that. Since the totems are imbued with magic, destroying the totems could have unpredictable effects. The humanity totem made everyone get violent and crazy when people lost their humanity. So destroying all of them could have a catastrophic effect. Brainy mentions that they don't need to destroy all of them, they only need to destroy one to make it impossible to assemble the AllStone. So the characters debate which one to destroy. They decide it is too risky to destroy the humanity or courage ones because it could make everyone get violent and erratic again like we saw in the previous episode. So they decide that destroying the hope totem is the least risky.

This episode had plenty of conceptual problems. In addition to the ones already cited... Really? The act that brings hope outshining the sun is a re-enactment of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace? Just because Jon Cryer worked out so well doesn't mean everything from that movie is redeemable.

On the plus side, Esme is adorable, and the actress does a terrific job for someone so young.

Hey! Someone remembered Mehcad used to be on the show! :D

Yeah, this week... not only was I, who has never had kids, yelling at Alex for her totally insane "parenting" attempt, I was also... bored. Only the last scene gave me any hope of something better coming. Otherwise, I've gone from anxiously awaiting new eps to just sort of hanging on. :sigh:

Supergirl - The Final Season
Season 6 - episode 16 - "Nightmare in National City"*

SG: Since the next few scripts deal with the aftermath of Miss "One step behind everything's" decision about which side of her life will take center stage (and the tiresome Dey-might-know-she's-Supergirl sub-plot), this episode did not have SG doing too much of substance, other than make frustrated faces.

Alex:
Next week, Lex and Imp-Thanos attack Alex and Kelly; I hope this series does not dig the grave deeper by using Esme's power to mimic other's abilities turn her into some sort of "savior" who steps in to beat back the villains with their own powers. ...that's just idiotic enough for a Berlanti series.

Nyxlygsptlnz: The Infinity Totems saga rages on, yet for all of the talking-up of the Totems, there's no sense of the oft-stated catastrophic effects of any of the objects, even as Lex dropped by.

Nia: Needed something to do, since there's been next to character growth in a few seasons. and its back to the "I know who I aaaammmm!" sister drama, and her being divorced from the belief of forgiveness. Yawn.

Lena: Sooo much nonsensical technobabble solutions. I never believed TNG could be outperformed in that department, but Lena's history of whipping up cartoon-levels of tech solutions have left TNG in the dust.

NOTES: *Nightmare...for the audience. Anyway, if anyone ever wondered why CW-DC was not catapulted to the big screen (aside from some actor shortcomings), the horrible EFX would serve as some very weighty evidence. The nightmare monster was laughable--another early 2000s video game-level composition, and not once in proportion wit the CG city.

Next week, Lex declares his love for Imp-Thanos. Okay.

GRADE: D-.

First the good..

I liked most of the Nia storyline with her sister. I also liked the drawings Esme did of everyone.

Now for the bad..

The Dream Monster. Another random monster caused by the hunt of the totem to give some of the characters action-y things to do.

Kara quitting Catco. For some reason, i guess at the whims of the supergirl writers, Kara can’t get to interviews on time, even though she definitely could have. Now every super friend is unemployed. I guess the writers are trying to save money on sets to keep everything set at the tower? They definitely seem to be removing all things holding Supergirl to this time so that she can join Mon-El in the future (my finale prediction).

William and Andrea are main characters that shouldn’t be main characters anymore. Everything with them is forced and shoehorned in because they need to be in almost every episode.

Why does Brainy have to be green because William is at the tower but Alex makes no effort to disguise herself? Makes no sense.

Overall, I’m sad that this once very good show is limping to the finish line with by far its worst season.
