Spoilers Supergirl - Season 2

I'm glad CW is reairing season 1. I probably will record them and rewatch the series. Want to see some of the early episodes again.

Honestly, neither is Superman's, traditionally. Luthor and Brainiac are the big ones, plus folks like Metallo, Bizarro, Mr. Mxyzptlk, Toyman, and the Prankster. Superman: The Animated Series and Smallville made Darkseid one of the big bads, but he wasn't specifically a Superman villain before so much as a villain in the New Gods comics and maybe Justice League (even though he was introduced in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen). Superman has never really been known for having a rogues' gallery as strong as Batman's or the Flash's. Few DC heroes have.
This was the Superman's "Rogue Gallery" in the 1976

When you have to put The Prankster and Amalak (that I hadn't the faintest idea who he was) between the "9 deadliest Superman foes" you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Let's see... clockwise, that's Parasite, Amalak (I've never heard of him either), I dunno, Toyman, I dunno, Brainiac, Prankster, Luthor, Mr. Mxyzptlk.

That is Kryptonite Man standing between Amalak(I thought I knew every minor Superman, I never heard of him either!) and Toyman.

The problem with Superman villians is the writers never try to make the second string ones more interesting. Instead they completely reimagine the few big ones.

The many versions of Luthor could have in theory been separate characters. Mad Scientist, Business mogul, xenophobe, curupt politician. Edit - just realized all but mad scientist describe the Rebupilcan presidential nominee...

Mr Freeze was a minor batman villain until Paul Dini made him interesting. Before he was played by Frank Gorshin the Riddler had only appeared in 2 stories in something like a 25 year period.

I've seen the actor in a couple of things before, but I don't have a strong memory of him. What worries me is io9's suggestion that he may be intended to take Cat Grant's place given Calista Flockhart's probably more infrequent appearances after the move to Vancouver. I've been hoping that Cat would still have a relatively significant role. Adding a new "boss" character makes it easier to reduce her role still further.

I guessed Kryptonite Man -- pretty obvious from the look of him -- but I checked the DC Database and it said that was an alias of Silver Age Luthor, so I didn't look further.

Superman: TAS tried to revitalize some of the second-stringers, like giving Toyman a creepy doll face and a tragic wronged-employee backstory B:TAS-style. Didn't work out as well as Mr. Freeze, say.

But there is the common thread of Luthor's arrogance and narcissism, the fact that what drives him to oppose Superman is his inability to accept anyone as his superior. The character and his motivation are the same, just the trappings and methods change. Either he tries to prove that he has more brain power than Superman, or he tries to prove that he has more economic and political power. His xenophobia is just a side aspect of his egotism and fear of being outcompeted.

He's a space cowboy with a horse that runs through space and old fashioned six shooter that fire lasers that can hurt Superman.

If he spends most of his time in space, of course all the aliens in space are going to call him Earth Man, or Terra Man. :)
