Spoilers SUPERGIRL - 2026 DCU Movie Grade & Discussion

How do you rate Supergirl 2026?

A+.

It dragged a bit in places, and coincidence played a greater role than I like.

Alcock is phenomenally good, and doubtless we'll see a lot more of Kara in the movies.

The Argo sequence was kind of amazing. It's by far my favorite visualization of Krypton and its end because of the tone and the choices - visual design, performances and mood went in a different direction than the usual skiffy movie cliches.
The Argo scenes were to me the best bit of the film.

I mean, I could feel Guardians of the Galaxy all over this film so that's always nice. Without feeling like a knock off.

Though this did feel more like a "Team" film than singularly about Kara. That whole bit where she's zonked out from Green Sun Poisoning and it just becomes all about Lobo and the Revenge Girl.

Isn't it too early to tell?

Box office Mojo says that it's earliest release date is 26th of June.

What's the date where you are bud?
It's not too early, the movie had preview screenings in the US before the 26th, critics largely didn't like it and neither did audiences, the numbers are horrible, it'll probably do around $40 million over the weekend, possibly below.
The movie is also out internationally and the numbers are even worse there, it's a complete disaster, the movie is a bomb of epic proportions, financially Supergirl isn't even on Flash territory, the movie's approaching Morbius numbers.

It's astonishing. She spends the entire movie claiming revenge is wrong and then straight up murders a totally defenseless man...
Yes she does.

It was a great mokent and unexpected turn.

She's protecting Ruthye from the effect killing Krem will have on her mind and character. She doesn't see herself as having that innocence to lose. She's a gunfighter.

No one would have cheered her letting him live after what he did to those women.

57 percent of critics isnt exactly high praise.

You are correct that more of the general audience likes it (which is all that really matters.) Its currently 57 percent critic/ 77 percent general audience. That's not even close to the 83/90 popularity that Superman enjoyed last year.

The general audience has the final word in that they simply were not interested regardless of what the critics and the small number of people who saw it think.

Was that because of the marketing? The character? The look? I have no idea.

If it has 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, wouldn't that mean that it's actually 43% of critics that did not like it?
Yes, but that's not really high praise either. The general consensus seems to be "It was fine." People expect more than fine. I'll make my own judgements when I get around to seeing it, but its still too bad that it hasn't garnered better reception. Especially when considering that even from the less than positive responses(from people who simply do reviews and arent pushing an agenda), Milly Alcock did a good job in the role.

Dude's own daughter said she liked last year's Superman better. Not good.

Says who? As of right now, RT audience score is 77%.
The cinemascore is currently B- which is bad for a supposed audience pleaser of that kind.

Most critics liked it and even more of the audience did.
It has a rottentomatoes score of 57% which is not good, The Flash had 63% for comparison.

Supergirl will be very, very lucky if it makes it to $200 million worldwide. Like it or not, the movie is a bomb.

I'm not praising or condemning it, just correcting a claim. :)
As soon as I posted that I realized that mistake and edited it. Yes, 57 percent is still a majority. Not much of a majority. Certainly not when discussing movies that are suppose to help continue a cinematic universe. But a majority nontheless.

Not being interested to see it is of course a different thing from whether they (those who saw it) liked it.

This is not low enough to say that audiences "largely didn't like it", which was your original claim and which is precisely why I challenged it.

Of course - it says absolutely nothing about the film itself.

What if does leave is the question of why this was rejected by every single market on the planet - in Germany, it did worse than Catwoman for example. Further discussion of that I think is best on the box office thread.

However I think what is going to be clear next weekend is that the word of mouth from people who saw it was "catch it on streaming".

This film is going to have a massive impact on forward plans for the DCU - it has to.

Cinemascores skew high because the people rating the movies are usually hyped fans who go to see it early, they are the ones who want to like then movie.

For superhero movies an A- means just okay, a B is bad, a B- is almost a death sentence.

Wonder Woman 1984 got a B+
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom got a B
Black Adam got a B+
Shazam! Fury of the Gods got a B+

So yes, a B- is low enough to know that audiences really don't like this movie, the reception is bad.
