Super Bowl flub in the National Anthem?

Who gives a shit?

It's our National Anthem so I'd say something like 300 million people give a shit. Further, it's disrespectful to say it wrong and just pure ignorance on her part for not, you know, practicing her lines and memorizing the song in the weeks or months she had to prepare.

Just watched a video of it, sheessh. That performance of it was just all around horrible! Ugh.

You can memorise the words to a song as much as you like, and it's still possible to fuck up. One of the times I saw Metallica live, James Hetfield fucked up the lyrics to Master Of Puppets - a song he's been singing and playing for over 20 years.

It happens. This is not news. Get over it.

This comes from The Daily Fail, so take it with the usual grain of salt; but god, I hope this is true and that it was done intentionally hours before she performed in the hope that Aguilera might look up the lyrics, because if so it would be arguably one of the greatest trolls of all time:

Christina Aguilera fluffs the lines to the National Anthem at the Super Bowl - by singing botched lyrics found on Wikipedia

Christina Aguilera made an astonishing gaffe by botching the lyrics to the American National Anthem as she kicked off the Super Bowl on Sunday night.

The 30-year-old singer performed a throaty rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner to open the NFL championship - but sang incorrect lyrics that matched an error from Wikipedia.

What she should have sung in the middle of the song was: 'Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.'

But what she sang instead, as over 100 million people watched, was 'Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, What so proudly we watched at the twilight's last gleaming.'

That error matches one that used to exist on the Wikipedia entry for the Star Spangled Banner Lyrics.

That's priceless if true.

I don't know what the lyrics are to the US National Anthem, but I do know that she added several hundred extraneous notes.
That’s okay, most Americans don’t know the lyrics to all four verses either. Or even that it has four verses.

At least she didn’t sing, “José, can you see?”

She messed up the ending too. Everyone knows the last words of the US national anthem are "PLAY BALL!" :D

:wtf:

You obviously don't understand how big an event the Super Bowl is in America.

National anthems are serious business!

They are. Imagine if she ever sang the Croatian national anthem incorrectly...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7109058.stm

Tony Henry belted out a version of the Croat anthem before the 80,000 crowd, but made a blunder at the end.

He should have sung 'Mila kuda si planina' (which roughly means 'You know my dear how we love your mountains').

But he instead sang 'Mila kura si planina' which can be interpreted as 'My dear, my penis is a mountain'.

National anthems are serious business!

Apparently so.

Did Christina Aguilera ruin the national anthem at the Super Bowl?

76% Yes. If you can't get the words right, you shouldn't be singing it.

24% No. She gave it her all, and one little mistake isn't a big deal.

(These were the numbers after I voted)

According to the people at People Magazine.

[edit] You have to vote to see the results. :)

I gotta remember that line and say it to my wife when I get home tonight!!

If you are being hired to sing the National Anthem on arguably the biggest American holiday in front of the entire country, then yes, I think you should try extra hard to get the words right.

Beyond that, though, she sounded fucking terrible. I always thought Christina Aguilera had a great singing voice, but I don't know where it went last night. It's like she smoked a carton of cigarettes right before going on stage.

Either version works figuratively in that context.

What the fuck does the size of the event have to do with anything? We're talking about the fact that Humans aren't infallible, and no matter how many times you learn and practice something, it is still entirely possible to fuck it up on the night. How is that so difficult to understand?

OK by that logic if a doctor makes a mistake that kills someone, it's OK because it was just a mistake. Or say your bank account gets irrevocably erased by a mistake it would still be fine by you.
