Summer Plans!

I don't have any specific plans this summer. I've got a couple of weeks off in a few weeks time, but haven't booked anything. I've spent some rather silly amounts of money over the past month on wine, clothes, new glasses, big household appliances and other random stuff, so I may just enjoy the time off by pootling around the local area rather than going abroad.

This time next year, though, I'll be less than a couple of months from retirement from employment. I'll probably take a couple of months completely off before starting some self-employed projects so I'm postponing most of my "want to do" stuff until then.

I'm now seriously considering accelerating the above plan by a year. After today, I'm not sure I have either the patience or the inclination to put up with another year of bureaucratic timewasting. It may be that I'll manage to get this summer (or at least, late summer) off to pursue other projects after all! :)

I'm a teacher, so I get a couple months off, but since they like cutting teacher salaries, I won't be able to afford to do anything!

Seriously, I'm taking the family on a road trip to Utah. We'll stop by Bryce and Zion on our way to Salt Lake CIty. On the way, I'll look for the world's largest ball of twine, and other roadside oddities.
Being stuck in the car with three kids, ages 5, 7, and 11. Should be an adventure.

Going to New York City next week to see some baseball (three Yankees/Phillies, one Yankees/Mets).

Will visit Minneapolis in July to see the new Target Field. I'm not really a Twins fan but I love seeing new ballparks. Especially this one since it was so badly needed.

In August will return to New York for more baseball, this time for TWO weeks. :techman:

Going to New Haven, then to Turkey for two weeks, then a 6000 mile drive throughout the western US to visit multiple national parks including Arches, Byrce Canyon, Canyonlands, Crater Lake, Badlands, Theodore Roosevelt, Redwoods, Glacier Park, Yellowstone, etc.

We're still a bit short on cash due to our wedding and honeymoon last summer, so we'll be staying close to home. Probably do some camping, maybe spend a weekend in Seattle (she's never been).

I'll be working as per usual. I'm also taking two summer courses online. So none of that will be fun or interesting.

I'm taking a quick, 4-day vacation to Las Vegas in two weeks. I also may end up flying down to Georgia for a couple of days in mid-July to see my brother, who's been down there completing a 12-week training program for a new Fed job. And then I am expecting to end the summer with some friends' wedding in Texas over Labor Day weekend.

If we ever get a date picked out, I am hoping to participate in the TBBS Hershey Park meet-up in July.

I'm going to Washington DC in a few weeks to present at a conference. I'm looking forward to that.

Dude, three words for you: International Spy Museum.

Well worth the cost of admission.

That's just a couple of blocks from where I'm staying. Looks cool!

There was a D.C. area TBBS meet-up at the Spy Museum a couple of years ago. Pretty neat. Sadly, it isn't free (unlike most of the museums in the city).

Just got back from #w00tstock in Minneapolis. We went a few days early so we could check out some sights and meet people I know from the internet.

It was crazy, the 3 hour show wound up running for 5 hours and I couldn't talk the next day from laughing so hard.

I've got the whole run down and video from it at my blog.

Now I'm back home in the heat and rain. *sigh*

I'll be working -- hopefully, I'll be able to find another job sometime soon, one with more favorable hours than the current one. I'm also planning to move; I need to find some place cheaper and build my bank account back up.

Beyond that, there isn't much. I'm hoping to take in a few movies at this years Toronto After Dark film festival in August, and then the Toronto International Film Festival the following month. Maybe I'll go to Fan Expo Canada, if I can find someone to go with. We'll see.

It looks pretty interesting. I'm going to add it to the list.

The conference is at the Grand Hyatt, so it's very close.

I'll be doing my first teaching job ever, at an inner city high school here in DC.

I wasn't really planning anything this year, but lately I've been thinking more and more about going to Las Vegas and spending even a few nights there, possibly in August or September. Now if I can get my brother to join me and save up some money for the trip, I really think it would be worth it. He's never been to Vegas before, and it's been quite a few years since I last went there on vacation.

Sometimes I think about going even by myself, but when I check the rates at Expedia, Orbitz, or Hotwire, it's much more expensive to go by oneself as opposed to having a companion. Also, I've never gone on a vacation trip by myself, and I certainly wouldn't want to be lonesome. We'll see how it goes.

Lots of swimming at the YMCA to stay cool and keep the kids worn out.

Tired kids makes for less sibling wars.

We also have free movies at the theater during the summer break. Even though they aren't new releases, the kids really enjoy them.

My plans this summer are to work my regular schedule. I might take a long weekend in the fall to visit my parents in Iowa; if not it will be an extended visit after Christmas.

Following through on one of them: a summer session Ceramics class.

usual things that go on this summer, put on hold until grandpa and I feel that I can do them solo without my grandma, who passes away this April: road trip to Washington state, plane trip to Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Got a road trip with my grandpa down south to visit my aunt/his daughter.

Get things squared away to transfer to Chico State.

I need your opinions, please. I've been itching to go back to Vegas, and I'm planning on going there with my brother in August. Is the following vacation package (via Southwest Airlines) considered a good deal? Please advise.

  • Trip Date: Thursday, 08/12- Saturday 08/14/10 (Three Days, Two Nights)
  • Two Round-Trip Tickets, SW Airlines, from Oakland, CA, to Las Vegas
  • Caesars Palace, Forum Tower Room, two nights
  • Three-Day Alamo Car Rental, one compact
  • Cirque du Solel Zumanity Show, two tickets
  • Grand Total: $969.87 (or $485 per person)
I saved this for now and am still checking with my brother and looking for other deals. I've also considered other hotels like Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, and Palazzo and have looked into other shows like KA. I have a budget of $500 per person and am trying to make the most out of the weekend trip. Let me know what you think. Thanks.
