Summer Plans!

Drafting the introduction and methods section for my honours thesis.

Finally going to Turkey for a 2 week holiday (have been planning it for 18 months)!!

Fortunately, CWS game did not get rained out. UNfortunately, it quickly got so hot that I had to leave after the 6th inning. Clemson was kicking ASU's ass anyway. :D

I need your opinions, please. I've been itching to go back to Vegas, and I'm planning on going there with my brother in August. Is the following vacation package (via Southwest Airlines) considered a good deal? Please advise.

  • Trip Date: Thursday, 08/12- Saturday 08/14/10 (Three Days, Two Nights)
  • Two Round-Trip Tickets, SW Airlines, from Oakland, CA, to Las Vegas
  • Caesars Palace, Forum Tower Room, two nights
  • Three-Day Alamo Car Rental, one compact
  • Cirque du Solel Zumanity Show, two tickets
  • Grand Total: $969.87 (or $485 per person)
I saved this for now and am still checking with my brother and looking for other deals. I've also considered other hotels like Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, and Palazzo and have looked into other shows like KA. I have a budget of $500 per person and am trying to make the most out of the weekend trip. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Do you really need car rental? With the monorail and all, unless you're planning on leaving Vegas itself during your trip, it seems a pointless expense.

A very good point, Mr. Holdfast. I'm considering getting rid of the car rental from the package, but for a different reason. Yes, I still would like to rent a car, but during my last two visits, I didn't like the fact that the rental agency had to charge me an additional $80 on top of my prepaid Hotel + Airfare + Rental Car package. When I asked the rep, he/she made a vague reference to "insurance"; the second time it was an upgrade fee for a bigger car. So I figured I would've saved some money had I rented the car separately.

A lot of visitors who go to Vegas most likely don't need personal transportation if they plan on spending the majority of their time on the Strip. However, I've always gone in August (in triple-digit temperatures) and have always found it convenient to drive a rental car. Each hotel resort is at least four city blocks (if not more) in size and quite a distance to walk from one hotel to another, say, from Planet Hollywood to New York New York. Parking may still require a great deal of walking, but it's mostly free of charge and most hotels offer valet parking for a modest fee.

Cirque du Solel Zumanity Show, two tickets
You know that Zumanity's rather sexual, right? Not saying that's bad (I loved the show myself) but you might want to make sure that you and the person you take would enjoy that sort of thing.

I realize Z is one of the more risque shows in Las Vegas, and it wasn't our first choice. KA is a bit on the expensive side. Mystere only has showings on Saturdays in August, and we go back home to the Bay Area on Saturday afternoon. Criss Angel's Believe looks ... so-so. Zumanity was my idea, and when my brother saw the two half naked guys dancing video on YouTube, he wasn't exactly thrilled. I'm still checking other shows.

I'll be taking a road trip down to Southern California to go to Disneyland and to meet some of the little lady's family. Can't wait!
