Summer Anime 2009

It's funny, because even the group subbing the show seems to hate it. I think in a vacuum it's somewhat amusing... but I think it really is a lot of "oh wow, that was a K-on reference with the castanets!" type of show... except that the whole show is built around those references.
I must admit though, I did laugh at that gag about game publishers amping up system specs in order to cover up a bad game.

But yeah, I just get the impression that this should be some kind of special within a larger anime. The one review of the light novel that I've seen is pretty negative on it as well.

The sequels to Darker Than Black and Kiddy Grade have started up. The former is awesome and seems quite promising the later is sort of annoying but I'll see how things go.

Hah, and I've been watching all the new shows. Really, somehow almost everything I've watched involves Yuri on some level. It must be like when Tsunderes were the hot thing a while ago.

Sadly it looks like my anime watching is going to take a nose dive. The internet on my base has the firewall from hell :(

Just got the first season of DragonBall, very stark contrast from DBZ, with S1 you get the whole Pilaf Saga, the First tournament, and the start of Red Ribbon, the first season of DBZ gets you Raditz up to Vegeta & Nappa'a arrival on earth (one fight and a bunch of training)

You know, I'm sure clintg has already thought of this, but we could do a nerd version of a care package and send him some anime on disc.

I could contribute all my "junk" anime DVDs that I don't want anymore. Although, considering our tastes are similar I don't think he'd appreciate it. ;)

LOL I guess its the thought that counts?

Luckily, I had a feeling this would happen so I made sure I loaded my hard drive with stuff on my back list. Monster here I come!

At least you'll know what to avoid when the time comes to sift through the Fall 2009 season of drudgery.

Yeah, at least last season had Spice and Wolf II, Haruhi 2, and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 that stood out . (Still waiting for Bakemonogatari, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and umeneko no Naku Koroni to finish up before I pass any judgement on those but they're also above average.)

The only real standout titles in this season that come to mind at this early stage are Darker Than Black: Gemini of the Meteor and InuYasha: The Final Act. The other 8 I picked up are entertaining enough, but could go anywhere at this point.

Kimi ni Todoke is good for what it is. Of course, I find it novel because I realized that Shoujo books are essentially like American Mary Sue stories. I mean, if Kimi ni Todoke had vampires in it, it'd basically be a Japanese version of Twilight.
Still, Production IG doesn't disappoint.

Otherwise, everything else I'm watching because there's nothing else on. I still hate myself for keeping Nyan Koi and Kampfer, but that's how it goes.

If you want that, watch the two Vampire Knight series. Truthfully though, they weren't too bad really. It seriously looked fantastic and artsy in the character designs and animation departments and had some good twists. The second season was superior though. They're not masterpieces but they were entertaining. *shrugs*

They're so dreamy... and they keep paying attention to lonely girls like me!

I guess I'd be interested mostly because it'd be funny to see a Japanese take on it. But yeah, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, Moonlight, Twilight... and of course Buffy/Angel. It's kind of played out. I can totally see why they are appealing to their specific demographic, but yeesh.

I stopped really expecting anything from Vampire anime storylines all that much after they metamorphosed into tools of comedy and just reached an over-saturation point, rather than scary/seductive monsters. I still love the hell out the Hellsing Ultimate OVA series though, fantastically brutal and awesome. It just gets better and better with every episode.

Too bad the episodes take forever to come out. :(
