Yeah, I don't get all the anti-love here. Unless you know the guy personally I don't see how you can have a strong opinion about him as a human being. To quote another Trek actor "get a life!"
Compare this scene with time loops involving the transparent aluminium and Kirk's glasses, Sulu meeting his great-great etc grandfather just wouldn't have been appropriate.
Scotty telling McCoy that this guy might have been the very one who discovered transparent aluminium (did he really or did Scotty get one hell of a chop busting from the temporal investigations team on return
) and Kirk reminding Spock that the glasses will once again be a gift are nice humourous touches because we know that the crew have cheekily created a paradox to help themselves out in the future. Unless Sulu porks his great-great etc grandmother a la Futurama, its not the same thing and was better left out.
