No it was apparently because of violence and Katana's mask.

Violence in a film (looks at every John Woo film); I'm skeptical about that explanation.

Katana's mask I could see be a problem. Big enough to ban a movie though? Maybe. However, the supernatural elements of the film I still think are what got SS the axe.

Japan is seen as an historical enemy in China. This is partly folk memory of the war, and partly because it helps the government to have external enemies to blame.
I remember an old chop socky movie in which the villain was Japanese - and had a Hitler moustache! Also a hairy chest. Very weird.

Oh, I know. It just seems petty to ban a movie for a supporting character. Especially with how much Hollywood has been catering their films toward the Chinese audience.

You see the Japanese vilification in martial arts movies still. The Japanese are always either bullies, invaders and generally just deplorable people.


In other news, which I found remarkable. SS has made $271 million at the foreign BO. The film opening in 30 markets. While Ghostbusters has only made $71 million, in 63 foreign markets.

Not sure how that works nowadays. Traditionally all those movies were done in Hong Kong which might not line up with the current mainland Chinese mindset.

The issue isn't the character so much as that everytime she's on screen it means the Japanese flag is prominent, and presented in a positive light.

What's odd is that they chose to use this particular look for the character, given the problem with China. It's a cool look, but not every iteration of the character has featured the rising sun. They could have used the symbol for "katana" instead, though I guess it's confusing that it looks a lot like pi.

Two massmurdering femazon furies from Apokolips who have real ties to the Suicide Squad and would have lined this almost random movie up with the future Justice League movies quite well.

I've been wondering lately, maybe the Joker should be a metahuman of some kind? As in, at least be super-strong, and maybe have some low-level mind control powers? Not a powered supervillain like Zod or Reverse Flash or anything, but something more fearsome than just some kooky dude with green hair and an implausible ability to recruit a handful off henchmen... especially in a world where the Justice League exists. Maybe one of his comic incarnations is one?

A nerd theory floated around is that because he was "burnt" by all those chemicals, that maybe he doesn't feel pain of feels pain differently, which is why when the world greatest kung fu dude owns him, he's not so distraught.

Of course, regular insanity can change a persons relationship with pain, so tying all know facts into a pretzel seems a little unnecessary.

A-. The first half hour had some good scenes edited in a lumpy way, but once the plot got going, the rest of the movie made more than up for it. Not enough Katana, though.

Some might be glad that the producers didn't go with her second uniform from the comics, the one with the bodysuit using an Asahi motif. As for the "Katana" name...?

Iron Man 3: A separate cut made exclusively for China, with Chinese actors (like Fan Bingbing) given roles in the movie.

Age of Ultron: With the character of Helen Cho and the film moving to Korea for an action scene.

Transformers 4: The last third of the movie shifting to Hong Kong for no reason. The effect of which netted TF4 a total of
$320,000,000 from the Chinese BO.

Dr Strange: The film/character of the Ancient One being altered to remove the Tibetean aspects, and replaced with "Celtic" mysticism. The Chinese and Tibetan governments have beef.

So, yeah. Hollywood really wants to court China for those hefty BO numbers they can bring.

Nicely written. I was unaware about those changes for Doctor Strange, and am quite appalled by them. Not that I have any connection to the character, but I've never liked what China has done to the Tibetan people. Now I might decide to miss that movie.

The China thing did play a role in it, but at least according to the people involved it wasn't the whole reason they changed the character. They've also said it was because they thought the traditional version of the Ancient One was to much of a stereotype and wanted to move away from that.
