Suggest a Series for Me to Watch

Frontier

Vice Admiral
Admiral
So looking for some new (to me) tv series to watch via NetFlix.

Some requirements...

Recent (nothing earlier than say, mid-to-late 1990s)
If still in production, no more than 3 to 4 seasons done
Sci-fi is best; fantasy (magic, midevil are a no-no)
If finished, having resolution is best (though not required; I love Space: Above and Beyond and Quantum Leap, and they have no resolution)
No horror-ish (Supernatural, Fringe) -- just not my cup of tea

So... yeah. Just throw some shows out there and I'll see if any pique my interest.

Some shows I've seen that don't need to be suggested are X-Files, Heroes, 4400, Space: Above and Beyond, Lost, Smallville, Eureka.

Battlestar Galactica
Any of the Stargates(SG1 is best, Universe is still in production and has only aired one season).
Earth 2 I liked, but it was one season and ended on a cliffhanger.

Not sure if Doctor Who would count, the 'new series' (Which is in the same continuity as the classic one) has been around for nearly six years and has five seasons and a bunch of specials. Plus there's the spinoffs Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures, aimed at different age groups.

Basically it's about the adventures of an alien who has a time machine disquised as a Police box (sort of a police use phone booth in Britain). In the old series he was a renegade from his own people-a race of time travellers-but in the new series he's the last one and has a bit of survivor's guilt about it. He usually travels with human companions. The series is a mix of humor/action/drama with a minor touch of horror.

Leverage - seems a few of us are watching unknown before the thread started. 2 seasons on DVD
Community - comedy show about Jr.College, 1 season on DVD
Dollhouse - Joss Whedon/Eliza Dushku, 2 seasons only
Dresden Files - one season only, fairly good show overall.

The anti-magic rule seems kind of arbitary, but . . . okay.

FARSCAPE and the new DOCTOR WHO.

Also, THE 4400.

Magic just isn't some people's cuppa. It's not mine, either. Seems like Frontier and I have the same tastes in genres.

Wish I knew what options were available on Netflix. I'd make some suggestions.

I've not watched Chuck but I think I would enjoy it. My step-son is watching it. It's kinda Sci-Fi in a James Bond type of way.

Not sci-fi but if you're into procedural shows you might like NCIS. I'm enjoying that one alot. I really can't stand CSI or some of the other ones but I'm liking NCIS.

Farscape. Battlestar Galactica.

Being Erica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_w-nuXO9Js)
My favorite series by a wide margin, and season 3 just started this week (Yay!). It is sort of Sex and the City meets Quantum Leap (the time jumping bits, not the inhabiting different bodies bit). On the surface, its about this girl who meets a magical therapist who uses time travel to fix her messed up life. Under the surface, well I'll let you find out :)

Doctor Who (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnPUF8an-XE)
Its a British, quirky, smart, entertaining fairytale with the whole universe and time as its playground. The good news is that the current series 5 a very good jump on point for new viewers as the show is helmed by a new producer, has a new cast, a new multi-season story arc, and well, new everything! So you can treat the current series as if it is the start of a new but very well polished television show.

Chuck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fgmcqvwLH4)
It's target demographic are geeks and nerds rather than scifi fans, but its does use elements from the genre so you may like it. I couldn't find a nice intro for Chuck so I linked one of my favorite scenes, which gives a very good feel of the show's style. Chuck is currently on its 4th season, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do.

For now, I'm only going to echo the Babylon 5 and Farscape suggestions, because I have a question. You mentioned that you will be watching the chosen series via Netflix, which makes me curious for the purposes of recommendation: are you only looking for titles that you can stream, or is disc-only an option as well? Titles that are only available through Watch Instantly are still kind of limited for science fiction shows worth watching.

Battlestar Galactica
Farscape

These would be my choices as well.

I'd also add Babylon 5 to the list if you haven't seen that. The first season is pretty rough, but it gets to be absolutely fantastic after that.

I'll second these (Babylon 5 and Farscape in particular were the best things to happen to sci-fi that wasn't Star Trek), and would add The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Lois & Clark The New Adventures of Superman, although both end on a cliffhanger.

Doctor Who
Stargate SG1
Warehouse 13 (similar in tone to Eureka)
Life on Mars UK

^with any of these, you can't go wrong.

I second the BSG, B5, DH, and TSCC reccommendations, and would also reccommend Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and ANGEL. I also liked Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda myself, even though many (most) people don't.

More shows I've seen/loved...

Battlestar Galactica - Huge fan, loved it.
SGU - Watching, never liked the other two.
Earth 2 - Enjoyed, own it.
Dr. Who - Never liked; always seemed a bit... off.
TSCC - Loved, pissed they cancelled on cliffhanger.
Firefly - Loved!

Whomever asked about the netflix streaming/disc thing -- I do the discs, I can't sit at my machine and watch streaming, lol. So that widens the options.

I usually rent movies (1 for me, 1 for family) a week but I've been renting TV shows (did Quantum Leap and 4400 this summer) and I've enjoyed doing that.
