That said, I like this more than anything else I have seen in Sub-Prime Trek....
This is an interesting statement. I wonder if -- since we seem to be unanimously fond of this design -- our position is similar to the way most people look at the
Enterprise. The average person sees the arrangement of cylinders, a saucer, and some pylons and recognizes it as the most famous starship in science fiction. They don't care about window sizes, the location of the deflector grid, proper nacelle taper, or any of those details. In fact, they generally love the changes as somehow enhancing the look, modernizing it for contemporary audiences.
Similarly, when we look at this new D7, the arrangement looks right, but there's also lots of cool new detail and it gets a thumbs up. I doubt if we care about the original design as much as the
Enterprise, so there's no outcry.
Those of us who hate the new
JJ-Prise because the engine pylons are wrong, or the proportions are off, or the different sections are a design mishmash (and I'm one of them), are probably getting a taste of how the ship looks to the average film goer and fans who don't obsess over the 1701's form.
Oh, and MadMan ... brilliant job, sir. Really, really brilliant!
