Studios: SDCC is not a must...

It IS. But, then, what they might be learning, you don't have to spend as much MONEY on this... you're having to get the stamp of approval.

Agreed. All they really need is a screening, maybe some prototype merchandise and maybe a Q&A with the writers and special effects guys. They certainly don't need to go all out like "Green Lantern" or the last two "Iron Man" movies. Honestly SDCC needs Hollywood more than Hollywood needs SDCC and they are just wisening up to the fact.

Or movie studios could invest in decent writers to produce decent movies and not invest all the money in stars and SFX
The box office results aren't telling them to do this, so why should they?
Or movie studios could invest in decent writers to produce decent movies and not invest all the money in stars and SFX.. just a thought.

Even if they do, fans of this genre (generally the majority of people who go to these things) can be completely unpleasable and piss in the cereal of an otherwise potentially good movie because of some stupid minor thing (such as how a costume looks).

Just more evidence of the lack of correlation between quality and monetary reward.

About Trek 09... it got my brother and sister-in-law into the theater and they thought it was awesome. And they've never watched Trek! They got a glimpse into my world and I confess, I liked the film too!

Wait, is liking Star Trek 09 a bad thing now because I loved the film as well (Other than maybe the fact that we were barely given time for character work like what I liked in TNG and DS9). Is this a Doctor Who effect where one thing was once liked, then we wait a few years and now the popular opinion has been reversed?

I thought there was still a pretty large body of opinion favourably inclined to Abrams' film... there's just also people who really don't like it, but they were around in 2009 too.

I definitely really, really enjoyed Abrams' film, and it was for me easily the most fun Star Trek has been since 1999.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of JJTrek as well. It was quite an improvement on what had been done with the property, for the most part, since the end of TNG.

I just started nuDoctor Who not too long ago and am totally obsessed with it now. I just finished Tennant's era and wow what a send off.

Yeah, it's just a fucking amazing show. And Tennant's departure was really an emotional high point.

I think Tomalek might be referring to the current Moffat and Smith era, which isn't quite as popular and ratings winning as the RTD/Eccleston/Tennant years. I like Smith, but not really a fan of Moffat's plotting. ( I think he was better as a once-a-season writer). Then again, the show's been on for nearly seven years, so franchise fatique had to set in at some point.

Or alternatively, the older show's popularity until the John Nathan Turner/Colin Baker/McCoy years.

People keep making this claim that Dr. Who is losing popularity, but, I don't think the facts bare this out.

The eyes watching live TV may be a smaller crowd these days, so no one is achieving the same number of viewers, but, Dr. Who is still maintaining the same percentage of audience, and the same Appreciation index numbers. Legitimate alternate viewing (iPlayer, etc) are at an all time high for Dr. Who, and BBCA viewership is actually growing.

Yeah I literally just finished The End of Time part 2 lastnight, so I haven't seen much of Smith yet other than the regeneration scene with the TARDIS about to crash. I had gotten used to Eccleston so going from him to Tennant took a bit of getting used to. At least 4 or 5 episodes. From what I hear though the transition is pretty smooth from Tennant to Smith, so that will be good.

Actually it's just something I noticed. Maybe it's a perception thing, but what I meant was fans at one time saying something was great, and now, because maybe they got something better, that opinion has been reversed. I think the key three things that I mean is Tennant's Doctor, RTD, and Martha, from season 3. Tennant's doctor was loved when he was here, yet now that we have Smith, it seems to bring out the opinion that the tenth doctor maybe wasn't as good. We've seen a lot of stuff regarding RTD compared to Moffat, and it seems like Freema is become the worst companion even though I thought she was liked in the third season. Like I said, maybe it's the perception I'm getting and it's totally off base.

I liked Rose, liked Martha, but didn't care much for Donna.I hear Amy and Rory are good though.
Have you seen all of Donna's episodes, or just her introduction in Runaway Bride? After Runaway Bride, though, "Thank God that Screecher left after jsut the one special, couldn't handle dealing with that every week", but, then she came back for a full Series, and I grew to love her character and was sorry to see her go.

Yeah I saw Runaway Bride and all of season 4 and the specials after that. She kind of grew on me and her story arc was well done, but ultimately the abbrasiveness of her personality bugged me. I can totally see why she is that way though with how her mother is, haha.

Like I mentioned above, I just wrapped Tennants arc and what appears (for now) all the other characters that came from the Eccleston/Tennant run. The send off for all of those characters was amazing. And I had watched Being Human prior to starting Doctor Who and it was pretty cool to see George and Nina in the same episode (The End of Time part 2) even though they didn't share the same scenes.

Oh, well, if you saw her in S4, then yea, you just don't like her.
