STRESS - How does it affect you?

I think it's safe to say that right now I'm under a lot of stress to the point that it's creating even MORE stress in my life. There are some issues I have to deal with, and as a result, my health is getting affected, too. I'm getting an upset stomach, headaches, light-headedness, and poor sleep quality. It's bad enough that I've exhausted all my accrued sick leave at work; now I'm having to tap into my vacation leave to cover my sick hours. It's like a domino effect.

How much stress do you have right now on a scale of 1 to 10? Mine would probably be 8. And what steps do you take to alleviate it? I'm trying to get back into meditation, but I find it hard to concentrate sometimes. I wish I could just pack my bags and get away from it all ...

The stress I get from work usually gets eaten away with something sweet and chocolately, but if I'm getting it from all angles, I shut down. In the last couple of weeks I was struggling to pay a huge gas bill, then realised I can't get another job unless it's similar paid to what I'm doing now, which isn't happening in this shitty town (my boss was being a major-shitface that week), and then my step-brother went into hospital for a few days (nothing major but I still panicked a bit). I wasn't sleeping properly and got a bit run-down. The stress is replaced with not caring about pretty much everything, and that attitude usually gets me through as I forget what I was stressing about in the first place. :D

Stress is nearly kills as many people as smoking and being overweight. Constant stress pumps up the adreneline in your body, making it go into the 'fight or flight' reaction. Having that adreneline coursing through your body consitantly can cause high blood pressure, heart palpatatons and sleep disorders. The less sleep you get, the more stressed you are and the cycle repeats.

I get stressed. Then I get anxious. Then I have a panic attack. Then I'm calm for a while, then it'll start again unless I keep up with the following, to de-stress and keep calm so that I'm not in 'flight or fight' mode all the time:
  • eat good healthy foods (I've switched now to a totally organic diet and it has almost made my panic attacks disappear)
  • work out (use up the adreneline)
  • yoga (very calming)
  • quiet music (any type you enjoy...it actually relaxes your blood vessels in your arteries and heart valves...just read a study on that, I'll try and find a link)
  • non-caffiene tea, especially chammomile or green
  • aromatherapy-again very calming; try lavendar
I try most of these, if not all, every day. It has helped me not be stressed continually, and I sleep better for it as well.

Good luck!

Eh, let's see, in the past month, my car broke down, my house almost burned down, work got really busy and promises to remain so at least through June, but I'd still say I'm at about a 3 or 4. I don't really get stressed, just annoyed. Perhaps it's all that pot I've smoked. :p

^ In that case Trippy, I am, to put it most eloquently, fucked.
I've been under a huge amount of stress for the past 12-13 years. I'm always in a fight or flight response mode, like a Doctor on 24 hour patient calls. I have high blood pressure, diabetes, and have trouble sleeping. I'm only 29 but I feel like I just turned 50.

My old job was causing me a lot of stress. This usually manifested itself as intense sinus headaches and/or a stiff neck (the flareup of an old injury from when I was a teenager). Also my blood pressure was going up. So I got a new job and I haven't had a debilitating headache or stiff neck in months.

Then try some of my recommenations m'dear! You're too young to let it wear you down.

I get alot of stress from my deppression. I usually get these panic attacks and I cry alot. Crying actually helps calm me down so if you have alot of stress I would suggest doing that. I also like to watch tv shows or movies but I prefer it to be things that I am familiar with such as reruns of "Family Guy" or "Seinfeld." I find some comfort in the familiar which is what you get when you already seen the episodes.

When I get stressed out, particularly over unimportant things, I just sleep. It doesn't solve anything, but it certainly gets rid of the anxiety.

I rarely get stressed. The only two instances of great stress I can really think of are job- and school-related. At one of my jobs I was so stressed since my boss was such a giant douche that I ground my teeth all night while I slept and had headaches all day because of it, and that went away as soon as I quit that job. The other was when I was in college...the only time I ever had a panic attack was the night before I decided to drop out of school. That was pretty much the deciding factor. It freaked me out so much.

I actually don't like massages because my back is never tense and it hurts more than feels good.

My mom doesn't understand how I came from her, cause she's always stressed and worrying about everything, and I'm ridiculously laid back...which just causes her more stress. Apparently she thinks you have to agonize about everything in order for things to work out well.

At my university, they passed out these "stress cards" the other day and one of my friends picked one up. You put your thumb on part of it and it changes color. You're supposed to be able to tell how stressed you are depending on the color it changes to. Most of my friends and I all got green, which means we are "relaxed" and not stressed. My roommate touched it and it didn't turn any color at all - it stayed black, an option for which the card was apparently not prepared. Personally, I think it means he's an android.

I love being stressed at work, not so much anywhere else...

...I tend to be quite laid back and relaxed most of the time, despite having a lot on my plate right now, but if I'm overloaded with work and my mind is kept busy with a smeg load of problems outside the family, I seem to enjoy it.

Those were much cooler when they came in the form of rings.
