News Stranger Things - Season 5

Almost done with Season 3, and the tonal shift in this season from the previous two seasons is a little jarring. Not really liking what they did to Hopper this season. Made him more of the comic relief rather than what he was in the first two seasons.

For me, I thought season 3 was the most 80s in tone of all the seasons. Season 1 pulled a lot from ET, Season 2 reminded me a lot of a slasher style film, and season 3 was a Schwarzenegger style action movie.

That big Russian dude who was Kinda the bad guy did look a little like Schwarzenegger in the terminator movies. I get the nostalgia (And the Neverending Story scene) but to go from kind of softcore horror of the first two seasons to more of action thriller in Season 3 was a pretty big change in tone. Looking back (And I did finish the season last night), I wish this was the year they actually explored The Upside Down and left the Russians out of it. I'm glad they will actually explore the origins of that world, finally, in Season 5.

The show is set in the 1980s.

The Russians were a big thing back then.

I think the only change I would make is now I wonder if Mike will die. In fact, I would be surprised if no one from the original party doesn't die and he makes the most sense.

I'm sensing Mike killed off would anger a large number of the viewers, probably threatening the series' rewatchability forever; he was the de facto leader (or co-leader) of the original four, fighting to both help Eleven and bring her into the group, so his legacy is almost tied to the heart of the series as much as Eleven's. Killing Mike would trigger a "what was it all for?" reaction with viewers.

I'm not sure if they'd actually kill off any of the core group of kids, but I could see at least one of the adults dying. I could definitely see Hopper going out in a big heroic sacrifice to save Joyce or Eleven,

If it's a noble sacrifice, then it was for the sake of saving the world. There are plenty of rewatchable shows that end with one of its heroes dying by the end. I don't see why Stranger Things would be any different.

Except they're not kids anymore (even ignoring the real-life ages of the actors). They're full-blown teenagers at this point. If they were still the kids they were in the first couple of seasons, I would agree, but they've aged considerably since then, both physically and mentally.

Oh, I didn't mean they weren't going to kill because they're kids, I just meant I don't think they'll kill them in general. I'm thinking they're going to want to end with them all alive in case they want to use them for future spin-offs or maybe a relaunch in a few years.

Two TV series, one of which will be animated, are already in development. This season, we'll see Mike's younger sister, Holly, who will also play a major role. The character is played by Nell Fisher this season. I suspect the second TV series will focus on her.

The Duffer brothers have already been clear that the planned spin-off won't have anything to do with any of the characters of the original show. They've gone as far as saying the only connections between them will be thematic.

So many movies with Russians as the bad guys.

I've watched the first two episodes of Season 4 and El's bullying really is impacting me emotionally. I've said in this thread that I think she will die in Season 5, and I think part of the reason why is I want Eleven to be at peace with herself. She was picked and prodded in a lab, already isolated from society and when she does try to have a normal life, she gets bullied and emotionally assaulted to the point where she breaks and hits the bully with a roller skate. It was pretty jarring, actually, almost to the point where I could totally understand why she did it.

Other things I am watching for in this season is Eddie and how he became a popular character in our culture. I remember not liking him when the season premiered but I do remember the Master of Puppets sequence. However, fandom as a whole had a much more positive reaction to him and I wondered if I was missing something. Maybe it's him being an outcast and then being blamed for a murder he didn't commit. We meet him and he is kind of weird at first. (Not that that is a bad thing, mind you)

Nobody quite does retribution to bullies like Stephen King in his stories. But you need a strong endurance* because his bullies are realistically despicable......and usually overnumbered.

I'll not be watching STRANGER in the immediate future, but perhaps Steve King influenced this gross development.

(*And for similar reasons, I'm still skipping on OLDBOY.)

While I had hoped they'd used tradition two-dimensional animation style of the 80s, I nonetheless love the animation style they have used because it still has an 80s feel to it.

Hopefully we'll get a proper trailer soon because I'm really looking forward to this adventure.
