Strange New Worlds-Worth the read?

I may have said this before, but I'll say it again: so far as I can recall, there is, between the SNW anthologies and Bantam's "New Voyages" anthologies, exactly ONE short story that I regret reading, exactly ONE that I deemed to be worse than just a waste of my time. I won't say which one, but it was from an author who went on to write ST fiction professionally, and I've heard that the individual was one of the architects of the "Requiem for a Martian" hoax.

I avoided the SNW anthologies for a long time, after all ten of them were out. Even after I read and loved The Aliens are Coming as a standalone ebook, it never even occurred to me that there would be similarly worthwhile nuggets elsewhere in the anthologies. It was reading Jens Deffner's article that really made me appreciate what the contest was, what it meant to its participants, and the quality of the material. I immediately bought the first volume after reading that article. I am still slowly making my way through--I intend to read all ten volumes, and have not regretted any of it so far.

The article is really worth a read.

That was my first thought. String Theory.
IIRC, the short story version had Kes dying at the end, while she definitely survived in String Theory, and it's the String Theory version that continues on to the relaunch novels.
