This image was extremely popular for well over 100 years.

Yes, but replace Uncle Sam with Ike, or Patton, or Westmoreland. Is it then as effective a poster in 2023?

I found the whole Una recruiting poster thing to be a little dumb. Just out of curiosity, as one who has never watched Lower Decks: Was the Una poster a one-off in this episode of SNW, or have you seen it before in LD?

People still become scientists because of Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, and others who advanced our society. It is not at all unreasonable that some figures would still be very well known, and venerated, a 100 years after their mark was left on history.

I gather that Boimler has been established as being fascinated with Starfleet history, particularly Kirk's era.

The Una poster may have been one used for recruiting many decades before the era LD is set in, but it speaks to Boimler because of his special interests.

Its like people these days using things such as Rosie the Riveter for decoration - as you say, speaks to an era of interest for the character and people often like to personalise their personal space.

Nothing unusual at all

I think perhaps you have completely forgotten about "The Trouble with Edward" and just about every episode that Reginald Barkley was in.

And those two weren't even in the second string makeup of the Star Fleets of their eras.

I'm pretty sure even in todays Navy there are members who would invoke these characters.
Service comedies are built around the trope. Gomer Pyle, Ensign Parker in "McHale's Navy". Sgt Carter in "Hogan's Heroes"...well the list goes on. Even military dramas tended to have at least one "goof".

Only if 24th century Starfleet has stopped species discrimination, which it hasn't. Passing IRL has negative connotations
Except Starfleet knows she's Illyrian. If she went from being someone whispered about behind closed doors to proudly being the poster person for Starfleet recruitment, that is a net positive. I believe the message is for those of us who are discriminated against here and now, to let us know that someday we'll be accepted as we are, even celebrated for it.

Probably not, but for complex political reasons that have to do with how we view what Uncle Sam represents now, not really because of the number of years that have passed. The fact that the image of Uncle Sam was as popular as it was for as long as it was is just an example to show that it wouldn't be unprecedented for a particular figure to remain popular for a hundred years or more.

So... episode 7...
Really liked those opening titles.
The animated section at the start was a decent introduction to the Lower Decks crew.

Like that portal design.

I do like the the Tendi Orion part, esp how Boimler uses it later.

Boimler fanboying is amusing, I thought it would annoy me but it did not.

Pike has a holiday for his birthday?

Smiling Spock!

Why does no one on the Enterprise blink at Boimler's uniform- you think they would have got him covered up.

Nice deal with the Orions. Liked their ship design.

Marriner coming through is very her.

"References are very specific" - nice call out on Lower Decks use of Easter eggs.

I do wonder if some of the Uhura fanboying from Mariner was partly aimed at Nichelle Nichols.

Marriner quoting regs to get Uhura to take a break was nice. Also, they don't update codes for 200 years? Bureaucracy right?

Cardassian reference in the bar on the PADD.

Like the Lab shades.

Q is Telane confirmed?

Nice callback to the NX-01 there. The Uhura and Ortrgas fanboying over her crew was a nice touch.

Una is the face of the recruitment poster. Cool.

I like how Pike did have a party/gathering afterall, I wonder if that is a temporal change?

The 23rdC crew in 2D at the end was really amusing.

Absolutely. I think some people may not have gotten that bit of subtext with respect to the rift between Una and Neera.

There was a point at which Sam persisted simply as an icon of national tradition, like the flag, and military recruiting routinely evoked such symbols.

I don't think there's anything to be gleaned from Mariner's Trelane comment other than the Q are a mischievous pain in the ass in their time and in Pike's and Kirk's it's Trelane. No mention of them being the same species, just different powerful beings who can manipulate space and energy and overpower a Starfleet ship.

That, and also just a nod to the fact that so many fan theories exist about Trelane being Q - very much a Lower Decks fourth-wall-breaking reference to make.

Plus would they include Organians, Thasians and the like?
