Spoilers Strange New Worlds Episode 7 - Those Old Scientists

I just watched the episode, and it was great, a solid 8/10 (held back a bit by some of SNW S2's stupidity, specifically Spock's weird attitude). Its the first episode this season that I'd watch again, and the first one thats anywhere near as good as the average Season 1 episodes. Boimler and Mariner were great, the actors are perfect for the characters even in live action. There were also a bunch of references that were fun, and the overall story was very good and treated both shows well. Overall, I'd say this will probably go down as a classic episode of Trek, at least for me.

It’s just the endless drumbeat from of “I don’t like XYZ and because of that I’m being attacked and peer pressured” when there has been absolutely positively no one in this thread saying even remotely anything like that is so disingenuous.

No one has been attacked or degraded for not liking Lower Decks.

On the contrary, the Lower Decks/SNW critics came into this thread swinging and have started crying wolf when they’re being told either to knock it off or that the victim act is bullshit

I don't even watch Lower Decks regularly, although I did watch a few of them. I won't say I had any trepidation about this episode - I already really trust all of these people as creators - but I haven't been particularly excited about it in the way that so many are.

So if I'm impatient, argumentative and dismissive with some people's statements it's not because they have the temerity to dislike something I like.* Hell, I'd even look forward to a SNW/STD episode at this point if Myers and Goldsman were in charge.

Because people are squeezing over at and not "grading" it? This episode is really a good as Far Beyond the Stars, The Inner Light, Best of Both Worlds, In the Pale Moonlight, The Visitor, City on the Edge of Forever?

Really? This episode is THAT good? People are reacting, not grading. If you think this episode is good, fine, if you think it's a 10, fine. But it's 91% a 10? This episode as that perfect, flawless and fantastic? Really?

I said it was the most popular. Surely, you know the 91% is a reaction score, not an objective grade of the episode. If we are judging the episode based on artistic qualities, no, I would not say that it is as good as the classics you mention. Obviously, those episodes are master pieces of story telling. But not every Trek ep has to be a serious scifi masterpiece. Trek has done lots of silly eps. I think it is great that they decided to do something different by having a crossover with an animated show. It actually shows some inventiveness for once which SNW sorely lacks. This SNW was super fun and that's important too. I found it to be the most enjoyable ep so far this season. But entertainment is subjective.

I knew this episode was going to be divisive. But I didn't think it was gonna get this out of hand...lol

Guys like or dislike what you want to. Doesn't make someone more or less a fan either way. Well maybe a little more a fan if you didn't like it....NO JUST KIDDING. It worked for some people, others it did not. I did not happen to like it too much. But this episode is hardly the worst thing I have seen on Paramount+ concerning Star Trek. I actually have more of a problem with the damn Chamber of Horrors turbolift interior.

I’ve never heard that. Possible definitely. The Romulan would definitely have wanted to analyse it.

There still could be parts floating around after the battle though or it may have been reclaimed later. We have no idea but that’s kind of my point. I was replying to someone saying that it’s impossible to have a part of the C on the D. I’m not saying there is a part I’m just saying it’s possible.

As for the 1701. Chunks are seen flying off above Genesis but even if they are subsequently vaporised I’m sure there are plenty of parts lying around from when it was refit in TMP and probably parts already stripped out as it was supposed to be decommissioned.

Since the part of NX-01 was literally just a pressure canister of some kind…they could have just used a chair from NCC-1701 taken off during one of her refits between 2270 and 2285 and that would have sufficed

Well, let’s see: the 1701 blew up and re-entered Genesis’s atmosphere, after which the entire planet exploded. Pretty sure there was nothing left to salvage.

As for the C, there is the possibility that some wreckage could have been salvaged, but since the Federation had no contact with the Romulans from 2311 to 2364 (after the D had already been built), the only way anything could have been salvaged is if any surviving Klingons from Narendra III found any wreckage. And I don’t really see the Klingons as the sentimental type.

Plus, the episode seems to imply that an actual working part was taken from the previous ship, not just a random piece of debris.

In the novel “Ship of the Line” as mentioned, it was the conference table.

IRL some structural steel and portholes from CV-6 Enterprise was integrated into Cvn-65 Enterprise.

I think the same kind of components are being integrated into CVN-80 Enterprise now under construction

I already answered this above. Pieces from refits. Bits that were floating around after the battle with khan, numerous others.

I’m not saying it definitely happened. I don’t really care if it did. All I’m disagreeing with is your assertion that it was impossible to have happened.

Pretty much this. LDS rarely takes itself seriously, and this crossover episode was no exception. I was curious to see if they would address the visual disconnect from TOS for comedic effect, but they chose not to go that route.

Again posting prior to reading this thread (although I did post a screencap of something that caught my eye as I tried to watch it last night.)

And yes, another 10. They are really batting 1000 for me so far in SMW Season 2.

Tried to watch it last night after a get together with friends, but because of a similar situation at the end of SNW Those Old Scientists decided to wait until this morning.

Loved it.

Not a complete screwball comedy, had some touching moments and did justice to all the characters on both sides of the Portal.

If there's one thing they really could have done that I would have 100% loved (given the animated part of the SNW cast and the end was NOT because of any of them traveling to the future for a short period); would have been to do the 23rd century animation in the TAS style; and LDS did that type of thing as an Easter Egg in one of their own episodes as there was a shot on a PADD of Kirk and Spock that DID look like their TAS character designs...

But yeah, that probably would have confused the majority of people watching this episode.

I don't care for Lower Decks at all, don't think I made it through an entire season, so that automatically negatively influences my opinion. Still, I was expecting worse. I'm curious, are the live LD actors the same ones who do the voices in the animated show?
