It's great to have DS9 prose set in the series timeframe; I really think Pocket Books should look at publishing more DS9 fiction set during the original run.

Manhunt Pool is fantastic. It cleverly took a line from "Crossfire" (in which Quark mentions he runs a betting pool on how long it will take Odo to solve a case) and mixes in intrigue from Garak and the Obsidian Order. Kudos to the author.

I like the return of Dukat as well in Dreamer and the Dream. It really brought to life for me Dukat's line in the series finale - "Can you picture it? A entire universe, set in flames... To burn, for all eternity".

Facade of Fate was good as well, always nice to see Jadzia again too. Very Twilight Zone-Esqueq!

The second half of the book was better than the first but this really isn't my series.

Then why isn't there one in the macOS version? I always thought that a table of contents is part of the e-book itself, not a function of whichever app you choose to read it.

Especially since most of the other e-Books I have, DO have tables of contents (even when I read them with the macOS app). SNW '16 is the only one that does not.

Edit: I checked my iPad and it seems that when read with the Kindle iOS app, SNW '16 does have a TOC. Now I'm even more confused. Why would the same e-book only show its TOC on iOS and not on macOS?

It is not a MacOS version. It's a Kindle version. It could be you may need to update your Kindle for Mac.

No, I always keep all my apps (Kindle included) updated regularly, on macOS and iOS.

Not this eBook hate again. It's unbecoming.

Even if it was printed, I'd still read the eBook.

Quite ironic, since I distinctly remember your whining about the "agency model" in terms of eBook pricing.

I complained about buying eBooks from Apple.

It's pretty fun trying to work out when the DS9 stories are set based on references to events that are given; The Manhunt Pool is 2371/third season based on Tain being alive and the events of Civil Defense being mentioned.

Yeah, that's always fun. I've narrowed down "The Façade of Fate" to mid-sixth season.
  • The presence of Worf and Jadzia places it during seasons 4-6.
  • Since Sisko knows Dulmur and Lucsly, it's probably after their (presumed first) meeting in "Trials and Tribble-ations".
  • Open hostilities with the Dominion mean it's probably after "Call to Arms", assuming the runabout wasn't exploring the Gamma Quadrant, which is possible. If it's after "Call to Arms" it's also after "Sacrifice of Angels" since they talk about returning to the station (and Worf is with Sisko and Dax rather than on a Klingon ship). Let's also push it a bit past "You Are Cordially Invited" since Worf and Dax don't mention their impending or recent wedding, though we don't see much of a hint of where their relationship is at overall.
  • It's probably before "In the Pale Moonlight" given Worf's hostile reaction to the Romulan, which would be particularly bizarre if they were explicitly allies.
Assuming my reasoning is correct, the story happens some time after "You Are Cordially Invited" (6x07 stardate 51247.5) and before "In the Pale Moonlight" (6x19 stardate 51721.3), probably toward the end of that period (maybe after "Change of Heart" 6x16 stardate 51597.2).

The references I noticed:
* Two years after Pup was integrated ("The Forsaken" 1x17)
* Mora Pol ("The Alternate" 2x12)
* Natima Lang's escape ("Profit and Loss" 2x18)
* "Out of all the lies you told me" and "endorphin withdrawal ("The Wire" 2x22, predominantly anyway)
* Winn is Kai ("The Collaborator" 2x24) (Odo being 'thrilled by Kira's touch' hints at this as well, since this ep was the first subtle hint Odo loved Kira... first one I'm aware of anyway)
* New Bajor has been destroyed ("The Jem'Hadar" 2x26)
* The Founders are known to be Changelings ("The Search, Part II" 3x02)
* The crew knows the Jem'Hadar are genetically engineered ("The Abandoned" 3x06)
* Reference to "Civil Defense" 3x07 as mentioned above.
* Tain is still believed to be alive (before "Improbably Cause" 3x20/"The Die Is Cast" 3x21)
* Sisko is a commander, not a captain (before "The Adversary" 3x26)

None of which really narrows it down further than DS9Forever's note, other than maybe the point about "The Forsaken". If we were to take "two years" as literally exact (as most chronologies tend to do even though people are rarely being that precise when they speak in real life), it would be stardate 48925, after "Facets" 3x25, which isn't workable. Instead I'd rather assume that it happened not long before "Improbable Cause", though not quite close enough that Garak would be likely to mention the events.

One minor glitch though: Quark mentions the manhunt pool in front of Odo, but Odo was clearly unaware of the pool almost two years later (in "Crossfire" 4x13). Not a huge deal, but a bit of a shame since that line is such a big part of the story.

Have any of the TrekLit sites/podcasts done reviews of Strange New Worlds 2016 yet? I've been keeping an eye out at several but have yet to spot a single review. I know ebook-only books don't generally attract as much attention as the paperback novels, but I'm surprised at just how far under the radar the anthology seems to have gone. Even Barnes & Noble doesn't have a single review. I've seen a handful at Goodreads, Amazon, and Google Play, but that's been it other than TrekBBS. (Though I suppose it's possible that this is about the normal attention for most of the ebooks and I've just never had cause to notice before.)

I got the new Star trek Magazine and like the Old Star trek Communicator magazine, They used to feature interviews with the Authors who wrote stories for the Strange New world contest the latest Star Trek magazine has interviews with some of the authors and the stories sound really interesting.

Was that issue #59? Flipped through the issue but didn't spot anything about SNW.

The issue I got had Women of Star Trek on the cover . Inside the magazine they had the interviews and stuff about Strange new Worlds.I get my magazine in the mail.

So you're a subscriber then? And what is the issue number? 59 as was asked or 60, or even later?

If so, it'll hit newsstands March 8th, so I'll keep an eye out for it.

Yes Capn' Calhoun it's Star Trek magazine issue 60 it's got The Strange new world interviews in it. The people interviewed are Neil Bryant talking about his story Dilithium is a Girl's best friend and John Coffren's Life Among the post industrial Barbarians. The last author interviewed is Nancy Debretsion talking about how she got her story ideas for writing her DS9 story The Manhunt pool. You can find the interviews on pages 84 through 88 in the back of the magazine.

Awesome. Thanks for pointing that out!
