Storylines That Fans Don't Like

So far, it seems like there is a consensus that this latest GoT kerfluffle is just another case of fan entitlement.

A piece for The Washington Post argues that GoT has always been about rape and that the The Mary Sue's response is a misunderstanding -

The science fiction and fantasy site the Mary Sue declared “We Will No Longer Be Promoting HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ ” in a piece that seemed to fatally misunderstand the difference between doing journalism about and criticism of a show and acting as a publicity subcontractor for HBO.

But as a critic, I think it’s important to preserve the distinction between saying that something simply isn’t for me and drawing a more definitive conclusion that something is a poor artistic choice.

Well, to be fair, if a restaurant served your dinner cold, undercooked, and in no way resembling the description on the menu, then whined about "artistic integrity" when you asked them to fix it, I think most customers would have at least a little "nerd rage".

Gamers have cried wolf a few too many times to be taken seriously, but the gaming industry does treat its paying customers like shit.

Artistic integrity or license has just become a phrase to try and make it sound noble when someone takes something a lot of people like and make drastic changes to it basically saying to all those people "I know you like it a certain but tough shit. I'm changing it to how I want to be and you can't do a thing to stop me so deal with it."

The ending in ME3 was consistent with the rest of the games, expecting anything more than that is due to gamer's unrealistic expectations. Falling for marketing hype instead of basing expectations off the real product. Then those that didn't like the direction it took whined to an extreme amount. There's a comparison to be made between them and fans who would boycott JJ Abrams star trek.

It would be violating that artist's integrity to completely rewrite their creation just because some people didn't like it, and cave into some whining. Fans don't get to rewrite a game just because they paid $60 for it...

The Mary Sue (self-decribed as "the premier destination for entertainment geeks, female or otherwise") has decided to stop promoting GoT because they did not like what happened to a character/a specific storyline on the show last Sunday.

They explain why here.

Never understood that. Killing and murdering people, men, women, children, animals, is perfectly okay. By the thousands. By the millions. Even brutally butchering people is okay, making close ups on every gory detail, with the victims screaming in agony. But rape? No, that crosses the fictional line.

I don't know why these threads always take a turn towards "Stop disliking things that I like!"

Some people don't like your favorite movies or episodes. Some people didn't like the story arc that you enjoyed. Some people found the characters (whom you liked) to be rather annoying.

So what?

Peoples' opinions are written off as "nerd rage" and "entitlement"... why? Because they dislike something that you like? It isn't even a counterargument, for the most part, it's just complete dismissal of someone's opinion. Then many of you complain that it's actually the people who dislike things who start the arguments. Yet, here you are, in a thread dedicated to not liking things, taking jabs are people who dislike things.

If you disagree with someone's opinion, nothing is stopping you from letting them know, but there's no reason to write them off as having a fit of "nerd rage". Star Trek, like any other creative work, has its fair share of criticism. It's no more exempt from criticism than anything else. You don't need to be its creator to have the right to criticize it any more than you need to be Da Vinci to give your opinion on the Mona Lisa.

I don't know about a 'boycott', but the BBC really didn't appreciate Data claiming that the IRA were going to be the ones to unify Ireland, bring peace and prosperity, blah blah blah.

Speaking of George Martin, fans left his other show 'Beauty and the Beast' en masse when he killed off Linda Hamiltons character. He did it pretty brutally, and with a long mourning period.

I personally liked it, but different folks...
