For one, I love that the Ferengi ended up being funnier. They weren't scary enough, not like the Borg or species 8427. To make them comic relief and build up a culture that revolves around money was a better idea. The episode where they travel back to the 1940s would never have been written without the Ferengi.

Sound effects are a big part of Star Trek. I have an old LP that has the sound effects from TOS. I can close my eyes and identify every sound. I'm gald they paid homage to some of the most familiar sounds in the new film.

The music list is a toughy. Where is the soundtrack to TRON? Star Trek deserves to be on there several times. They have had some of the best composers.

Any other ideas about the side stories?

I don't know if this is what you mean, but I personally always seem to like the background players more than the main characters. I find that in my mind, I create a very vivid back story for them which brings them to life for me.
For example, I used to love the character of Ens. Youngblood on the first season of TNG. The guy never said one word on the show, but I liked him. The same with the redhead lady in the security/engineering/operations skant uniform who appeared frequently on the bridge. She actually turns out to be a very interesting character.
I guess that's part of the reason I loved the episode "Lower Decks."

I think the OP is referring to the stories that are headlined on the right side of the forum, that I hardly ever notice. And when I do notice them I often find them fairly interesting and wish they were more visible so I would remember to read them.

And the Ferengi are awful and the worst aspect of DS9.

So sorry, yes the little blurbs to the right. I check them out if the title holds interest. Guess few people read them.

But in any case, I too like Lower Decks. Love Taurik and Lavelle. Seto (sp?) was cute as a button. And the attention to lower rank officers getting promotions hadn't really been focused on before.

The Ferengi are awesome.

That said, I think Shimerman is right on the money that the creatures depicted in "The Last Outpost" are completely unviable as villains -though puts too much of the blame on himself - honestly, the problem's right there in the script... the Ferengi aren't just written as venal, they're also stupid. The episode strongly resembles "Errand of Mercy", the first Klingon episode, in concept, but the ending of that episode made the Klingons and Federation seem far more equivalent than "The Last Outpost" depicted the Ferengi.

So after botching them as villains and making them ridiculous every which way, they more or less found their role on TNG as comic villains and on DS9 as comic foils. I'm happy with that.

I love checking those stories out. The vast majority of them are nothing less than absolutely fascinating and often quite humorous, nicely written and the like. The people who put that stuff together should be very proud indeed.

Especially if they're looking for a freelance journalist/writer who happens to kick a lot of ass in such fields.
