OK, started plying STO, ust add that game is way oo complex, way too many things to worry about and way too many ways in which Cryptic/Atari can rip of Star trek fans.

Sorry for my bluntness but I hate corporate nonsense especially when it tries to tip me off.

Anyways, without any help and alliance w/e I completed few tutorial missions in Vulcan sector, progressed to Ensign 3 or what ever that is, or Lieutenant, not sure which one i am now, game is that confusing!

O yes, went on a killing spree to kill few orion pirates and Gorn ships. Its best I find to get some energy credits (collect parts from ships that you've just destroyed), its a slow way of making a living in the game, but I have no idea, so if you guys have any ideas as to how to make a decent living, progress faster in ranks,w/e would be nice to make a guide for newbs such us I.

    I rate this game 6/10.

    STO "complex"?

One piece of advice: Stay away from other MMORPGs besides WoW. If you find STO "complex" you are simply not ready ti play any.

As for energy credits, you don't need that many.

A few pieces of equipment are mission rewards, so you just need to play them (and win, obviously) to acquire them. The Breen set is one example of this.

Besides that, if you bother to collect anomalies, you can gather materials and craft more equipment at Memory Alpha. This is the only way to get your hands on the Aegis set.

And to make it easier, if you do those "explore three systems" missions in the nebula sectors, you get "badges of X order" as reward. You can exchange those badges for equipment at several points in the game.

Usually, ECs are only needed to acquire items at the Exchange.

^^ I had some difficulty in getting to know the game at first, my frustrations with the game were result of that.

But since than I have progressed and learned few things about the game, an fleet adopted me (yep that happens to) and I am now Lt Cmdr, 3r grade plying mostly in Klingon space atm, did try Romulans and even Cardasians, not advisable for newbs such as I, its my 5th day of game play.

Anyone with any advise for what weapons, shields, I could fit on Miranda, I am lt commander atm, good advice is welcomed.

First piece of advice... scrap the Miranda.
Go to Ship Requisitions and turn in the ship token Admiral Quinn gave you for your promotion.

if you want to be a squishy damage dealer pick the Saber Class escort.
if you want to be a survivor, get the one and only Constitution Class cruiser.
if you want to be an annoying (for your enemys) debuffer/controller there is a Nova Class science vessel waiting for you.

ok, my current ship. I have progressed to a rank of Lt.commander 5th grade. soon to be Commender, give a take few hours of game play. Should I keep my current ship or go for Akira or something even better?

I'd suggest going for the Akira.

As for weapons, my suggestion is to go for a torp and dual heavy cannons on the front, with turrets on the aft.

The best shield at you level in my opinion is the covariant [cap]x2. You can get one as a reward from a mission called "Skirmish".

^ I agree. Covariant and Resilient shields are the types I use the most frequently.

I used the Akira with standard dual cannons because I liked their faster firing rate. Heavy Dual cannons work well too.

The aft weapons I typically have a beam area and another torpedo launcher. However when I was using the sabre, I had the aft weapons be a turret.

Keep in mind the stock gear a new ship comes with is usually a level below the ships Tier.

    You are eligible for

    Tier 1: Mark I-II
    Tier 2: Mark III-IV
    Tier 3: Mark V-VI
    Tier 4: Mark VII-VIII
Tier 5: Mark XI-XII (XI-XII only for Rear Admiral Upper Half+)

Items have different quality levels as well.

White/Common: You can usually buy white gear from regular vendors and common loot.
Green/Uncommon: You can get green gear for Marks of Exploration or PvP medals or Crafting as well as uncommon loot. This gear is the same as white but usually has a chance for additional procs or a damage/resistance/hit point/etc. bonus.
Blue/Rare: Like green gear, usually easier to get at hiher levels, has two procs or boni
Purple/very Rare: Triple procs/Boni, very difficult or expensive to get. Usually a hefty grind.

    You don't have that option.

As soon as you get a promotion, you should go to ESD and get the ship that comes with your new promotion.

One of the flaws of the game, from my point of view, is that STO treats your avatar in space, for that is what your ship is, as discardable junk. That way of treating the ships is contrary to the ST spirit.

So, every ten levels you have to go to ESD and get a new ship, like it or not, and re-equip it with new weapons and equipment.

One recommendation for equipment at your level is to do the Breen missions and get the set pieces as reward. This set is a very decent combination of shield, engine and sensor array that you can use until you are able to craft and equip the Aegis set. Just remember to re-do the Breen missions every time you get promoted and get a new ship, as the level of the equipment rewarded will rise accordingly.

About weapons, as your toon is a Tac, which is the only profession I haven't played, I'm not sure. One safe bet is, if you have bothered getting your crafting up to par AND have the proper materials, to go to Mem Alpha and craft some purple weapons. Quantum or photon torpedoes for sure, and depending on the ship you choose, cannons or beam arrays. Obviously, it also depends on what skill are you putting points into: don't bother with quantums if your skill points are in photons, and if you have been investing in cannons, equipping beams is not a good idea.

I do agree that it's rather disappointing that ships are basically treated as "discardable junk," to borrow Darth Thanatos's phrase, in the game. The Steam copy I purchased came with the original Enterprise Tier 1 ship, so moving from there to Tier 2's cruiser I can at least "pretend" that my ship has received a refit a la TMP - and give the new ship the same name and registry number as the original, after decommissioning the first one. I'll probably do the same mental pretending when I get an Exploration Cruiser Retrofit at VA on my current Engineering character, who I plan to command an Exploration Cruiser at Tier 4.

Now, if only I could remember what name and registry number I had used for my Tier 4 Escort on my Tactical VA... But that was a year ago now, and I didn't keep it around when I leveled up.

    Crafting... Hummm... Yes.

    Let's see...

First thing you need is to collect materials in the Nebulas and exploration sectors. You know, those sectors where the "anomalies" appear, and when you get close to one, either it is a system with a mission to do in there, or a minigame.

The minigame rewards you with crafting materials.

Different sectors provide different materials, color-coded, and with three variants of it ( "atoms", "triangles" and "flowers" ). Each color marks the materials as appropriate for crafting items of a certain rank.

For instance, the red materials are suited for crafting Lieutenant level weapons and items. With red materials you can craft also certain items, like medikits, but the most important thing is that they are used to craft schematics.

Schematics are a vital part of the crafting process, as they are needed for everything. If you want to build a torpedo launcher, you will need a torpedo launcher schematic, and the same goes for a shield or a rifle, each of them has its own schematic. Also, schematics are not level dependant, so a shield schematic can be used for crafting a Mk VI shield, or the Aegis shield.

So, you can start by collecting as many red materials as you can, or as your patience allows. Collecting materials is booooring. Try to pile a few hundred red materials, and even then, you will be back to collecting red materials even when you get to VA.

The minigame for collecting materials will drop, from time to time, other materials, known as "particle traces". There are ten classes of them and when you get them all you will be awarded an accolade. Particle traces are also important, as they are needed for crafting the "good" items. All purple items need particle traces, different particle traces for different items.

Okay, so you have red materials. What now?

Assuming you haven't done so, fly to ESD, to the central junction. In there, there is a guy (don't remember his name) that will assign you the mission of going to Memory Alpha. Before doing so, though, it is a good idea to go to a food vendor (I think the ship replicator doesn't provide them) and get a "Bajoran Jumja stick". That piece of food is needed to complete a quest in MemAlpha, so having it ready will save you some travelling.

Go to Memory Alpha, (upper left corner of the Alpha Centauri sector block, if you don't know where it is), and land. First of all, complete the mission that brought you there, and look for more missions to do, several of them will give you some Diplomatic Points (DXP), and in some cases they are a basic tutorial for scanning anomalies and crafting.

Once done that, you can go to the central console, and do the crafting. You need to craft some schematics first, because they have no pre-requisite crafting points AND provide ten crafting points each.

So, select the "schematics" tab, look for the schematics of the items you want to craft, select it, and hit the "craft" button. Try to select useful schematics you plan to use: torpedo launcher schematics are a safe bet, but if you specced on cannons, crafting beam array schematics is wasting materials.

For the really nice items, you will need crafting experience, so crafting a few tens of schematics will give you a few hundred points of crafting experience. That should be enough for crafting Cmdr or LtCmdr level items, provided you have the proper colored materials, obviously. IF you don't have them, go to the appropriate sector and start collecting.

A useful trick when crafting is going from the items with lowest crafting points requirements to the highest. This way you are sure you have enough points for the hardest items. Still, be extra careful with the particle traces or you might find yourself out of particle traces for building the "really good" stuff.

You can also craft shuttles. There is a mission that rewards the schematics for the shuttle, which cannot be crafted, only obtained as reward.

Ok, at this point I would recommend putting any further questions of general gameplay into the general STO thread. This one is supposed to be for fleet topics, fleet invites and so on.
BTW, if you want to join the TrekBBS Armada I will be happy to invite you at the next opportunity... Or any fleetmember who is faster then me. ;)
That would get you access to our fleet bank and chat. Ot will be easier to team up und provide you with the best asset you can get: in game advice, team support and a better social experience.
Just provide us with your player handle.
    It looks like this: Tristan@handle

very thankful for your really great advice guys, and Darth Thanatos thanx a lot for your extensive reply, it did help me a lot crafted around 7-8 schematics, just to gain some experience. And my apologies for posting here, just realized it it a fleet recruitment thread.

Yeah but anytime you even think about bringing this topic up on the site in hopes of changing this the PVP is god/canon is god/TNG is God/the tier system is God brigade show up and waste no time villifying you for your opinion leading to the Devs writing the issue off as controversial and putting off doing anything about it.

Well I hear their working on some kind of upgrade system so we might get to hang on to ships longer at some point in the future.
