STO: The Needs of the Many cover.

Maybe there's a language issue here... you don't seem to understand yet that Pocket will not be publishing books based on the new movie. They were going to, but the books were removed from the schedule.

And interest in something new does not equal hate for something old. It's possible to love more than one version of a story at the same time.

Yes yes.. for now... lets wait a bit more, a year or two or three and lets talk then.

And yes, i said hate, you enter to any ST page to read news about books and you read the comments and you find "I dont want old trek!! i want nuTrek!!" or "old trek its boring, give us some books about nuTrek!!!"
Ok, but this is another topic..

Not in my experience. It seems to me about 95% of ST fans like both versions of the timeline.

This very forum is probably the leading Trek Literature discussion page on the Internet, and I can only recall one person suggesting that classic Trek novels be abandoned in favor of Abrams Trek. Most people are willing to see both lines coexist. If anything, the only "hate" I'm seeing is from a few classic-Trek purists who refuse to open their minds to the new version.

Where are these boards? I agree with Christopher. I may have seen one or two people on the trekBBS who have said they want pocket to get away from the prime timeline, but it hasn't come up in awhile. Links would be helpful. And maybe a english teacher as well...

And maybe a english teacher as well...

Your know what, I think this is completely and utterly uncalled for. Do you know that English is his or hers first language or even where he or she is from?

WHOA there hoss. Take it easy. I meant for the bad grammar and didn't mean to bring anyone down. That's why I didn't use the "snarky smiley asshole rolling eyes face". And no...I have no idea where they are from. And I think it's a definite "no" on english as their first language. But if they are using some kind of online translator, then they need a new one.

I think that you know that I'm not someone who regularily makes fun of people around here. I didn't call them any names, and I didn't use any caps to indicate I was yelling at them. cerritouru was the one making a blanket statement about online trek fans without any support. Talk to him or her.

Well, I'm a gamer and a Trekkie, they're probably my two favourite hobbies (and I'm studying video game design and development at the moment), but I am not interested in STO at all.

I followed the development of the game back when Perpetual was supposed to be making it, and I was very excited to learn that Cryptic had picked it up. But over the months, as I've followed its development, my excitement has dwindled and I have no plans to buy it in the near future, if ever.

The major turn-off for me is actually the story - I love nuTrek just as much as I love 'old Trek' - but I suppose I now have a very specific idea of where I think the Trek universe should go post-Nemesis, thanks to the Destiny trilogy.

The Borg invading the Federation, the Borg being destroyed altogether, the Federation strengthening its alliance with the Klingons, Romulans and Cardassians, and of course, the formation of the Typhon Pact!

I like the direction the novels have taken post-Destiny much, much, much more than the storyline of STO. The Federation going back to warring with the Klingons? This whole invasion thing being engineered by shapeshifting Species 8472 infiltrators?! BLERGH.

So I told myself, oh well, maybe the gameplay will make up for it. But everything I've read since its release has made me think otherwise - combat seems to be its main focus, yet an in-progress review from Gamespot suggests that the combat is poorly done and overly easy. A post I read in the STO thread indicated that even the diplomatic missions degenerate into combat!

And while I'm usually all for customisation, the idea of people creating random hodge podge races, when there are so many Star Trek races who've barely been seen and who could be fleshed out instead...

Neither the gamer nor the Trekkie in me has seen anything impressive or noteworthy in this game.

I'm much more inclined to spend $15 or however much the novel will cost, and see if a skilled Trek writer can save the poor storyline.

Also, I apologise for my rant, perhaps this is not the right place for it... I'll move my post if anyone objects to it. ;)

I agree with you, except I didn't have the will power to not buy the game.

The storyline is pretty stupid. The novels are much better.

The game play is OK, but it gets pretty repetetive. Like you said, even when you think you're getting a diplomatic or scientific mission, it just turns into "Kill all the bad guys."

I've been playing it occasionally, and it is kind of fun just to geek out and explore the ST universe, fly around in my ship, and visit places like DS9 (though I was disapointed when I went into Quark's Bar and Quark wasn't there.)

^It's still called Quark's but he's not there :vulcan:? Is it still the Ferengi consulate/embassy? Maybe he finally got his moon...

Haha, well its more money + MMOs require constant fees, rather than strong willpower. And despite our collection of numerous Trek games, we haven't bought any for years now...

But I'm glad to hear that my impressions are in fact accurate - I have been wondering whether its actually better than I've heard, and I'm not giving it enough of a chance... But so far people seem to just enjoy the geeking out in the Trek universe part, (which I admit does tempt me somewhat, but I'm only planning on doing a free trial when/if they offer one).

As a discerning gamer... well, I could have easily overlooked the storyline if the gameplay was amazingly fun and it actually felt like a Star Trek game. But so far the only Trek games I've played which actually felt like Star Trek are Star Trek: 25th Anniversary (which I recently played using DOSbox) and A Final Unity (on a computer running Windows 98) - they're old point-and-click adventure games made in the early 90s that play like an episode of TOS and TNG respectively.

All other Trek games are too combat filled - which would not be a problem, if the gameplay wasn't boring, dull or repetitive, or if the game wasn't just buggy! :(

^although off topic, I must say how awesome it was to run around the Voyager, Klingon, Mirror Universe TOS,Borg ships and Enterprise in the Elite Force games (although the massacre gameplay didn;t fit Trek very well). Defending the bridge side-by-side with Picard was pretty cool too.

Yeah, the Elite Force games were awsome, despite the unTrekness of the FPS aspect. I know this is going off topic but I've been following the game Heavy Rain for a while now, and I really think something like this would work great for Trek.

I think so too! Trek games need to stop being about combat, and start being about puzzles, mysteries, diplomacy, adventures, etc - i.e. all the main elements of the episodes!
