This may have already been answered. I've looked so I apologize if it has. But what is the purpose of the gap between the "saucer section" and the deflector dish on the new ship. Is it just style? Why not just keep it filled in?
In game, its argued the split neck allows you maintain Slipstream velocities for longer, and it does. Gives you around a minute in slipstream vs 30 seconds in other ships.

I assume the slipstream is important to the game? I just started playing it myself
Artistic mostly. The design as it was further developed by the original artist that won the contest evolved it into a "warp ring" that separated with the saucer. STO ignored most of his input though, so ingame it doesn't do anything. You could chalk it up to improved "warp dynamics".
As someone who doesn't play the game, can someone post a pic please?
Ew that is ugly...
I mean, did they learn nothing from the Oberth class?
...and lets get back to discussing the oddity that is the F's neck

The flattened streamlined shape of the vessel and the neck are designed to minimize turbulence while in slipstream allowing for longer length flights.
Now what might really bake your noodle is how she's already got an advanced variant coming. The C-Store version will be mostly identical in appearance as far as I know, but it's secondary hull shuttlebay is removed in favor of it's own Defiant sized escort vessel, with similar scale armaments.
Not sure how much different it'll be overall.
