Stillborn Sulu Show

Should there have been a standalone Sulu TV show?

To me, that’s not much different from having a Captain Worf show starring Dave Chapelle. The whole point of the Sulu show was for it to be a vehicle for Takei.
For me it would be like if there was a Captain Pike series with Anson Mount

Lordy, no. Every single TOS crewmember does not need to become a captain.

Besides, Grace's performance in TUC was really stale. She wouldn't have been able to carry a series based on that work.
Agreed. I like that she was able to be in the movie, it provided a little income from Star Trek that earned a whole lot of money for the studio but not much for the actors after fairly mediocre late 1960s pay. However, promoting every single ensign or lieutenant or yeoman with a speaking part in TOS up to captain or higher invites small universe syndrome.

Also Starfleet is going to need to make a lot more vessels if every officer on a ship who survives a couple of five year missions eventually moves up the ranks and gets their own ship.

One Constitution class ship could produce 200 captains, leading to 200 more ships and crews being assembled for them to command. By the time those officers become captain they need 40,000 ships, then the next generation after that needs 8 million ships, then 1.6 billion ships, and so on.

Depending on how many of them go on a landing party wearing a red shirt and never return...

There used to be a TV show on for kids called 'Going Live' - now remember, this was 1991, and memories are trick things. But I swear they had Takei on the show and they were promoting ST:VI and he brought up the idea of a Mr Sulu TV show. He said they already had a ship called the Excelsior and that could even be the name of the series.

That's hard to believe, given that George Takei is famous for being so reserved about promoting himself.

This thread should be called "Unconceived Sulu Show" since egg never got fertilized.

"Ill-Conceived" is even more accurate.

Hey, at least Captain Sulu got an audiobook. That’s more than what Captain Worf got: a lame joke at his expense.

Gordon the gopher would have made a better captain.
