I bet Abrams is really regretting that he didn't take my advice and have the Cloverfield monster wreck San Francisco instead of the Vengeance in the Japanese release right about now.
Seriously though, as said, opening over three months later? I bet most die hard Trekkies in Japan found alternate means of viewing it by then. Of course, that can't account for its failure completely since non-fans obviously weren't interested, but it couldn't have helped, either.
$9 million US in three weeks is bombing there? That's just short of double Star Trek 2009's take for five weeks.Trekweb reports Into Darkness bombed at the Japanese box office. So much for Ben Cumberbatch's superstar status there.![]()

One of the negative reviews cited seems mostly to fault the movie for not being TMP. Another boils down to "Captain Kirk is an a$$hole" and "even the Japanese subtitles didn’t tell the story correctly."
To be fair, they did say of the second review (the "Captain Kirk's an a$$hole" one) that it " ... goes on to lambast the film, but the rest of it is not worth reporting."Ah, Trekweb's unbiased reporting strikes again.
