STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening [U.S. box office]

Trekweb reports Into Darkness bombed at the Japanese box office. So much for Ben Cumberbatch's superstar status there.:(

I bet Abrams is really regretting that he didn't take my advice and have the Cloverfield monster wreck San Francisco instead of the Vengeance in the Japanese release right about now.

Seriously though, as said, opening over three months later? I bet most die hard Trekkies in Japan found alternate means of viewing it by then. Of course, that can't account for its failure completely since non-fans obviously weren't interested, but it couldn't have helped, either.

It'll probalby beat ST09's Japanese gross by 100%. Not too shabby

It seems like many web sites are resorting to tabloid journalism with sensational headlines to grab attention. We had "STID voted the worst movie by fans", then "Star Trek is broken" and now "STID bombs in Japan".

It made twice the previous Trek movie and it's a bomb? Hopefully the next Trek movie will bomb in Japan too by making $20 million.

$9 million US in three weeks is bombing there? That's just short of double Star Trek 2009's take for five weeks.

One of the negative reviews cited seems mostly to fault the movie for not being TMP. Another boils down to "Captain Kirk is an a$$hole" and "even the Japanese subtitles didn’t tell the story correctly."
Ah, Trekweb's unbiased reporting strikes again.
