Stick a fork in it...

I didn't really the RETURN OF... series much at all. At least not the first three. I've never bother with the recent straight to video 4 and 5.

I haven't really seen any modern horror films because, well, I just don't. I think the last one i saw was The Ring, which was okay. What are some of your favorite modern ones?

Rob

Unfortunately there aren't too many great modern horror flicks. Most of the best are back in the 70's and 80's. But recently I thought the remake of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was pretty good except for the very end which was a tad silly. If you dig the Romero zombie films then I suggest SHAUN OF THE DEAD, as a very successful blend of comedy and zombie flick.

I think a lot of modern horror movies try to hard to be cool and stylish, and it undermines the actual scariness. Look at the "scariest movie of all time"-- THE EXORCIST...it was shot in a very matter-of-fact manner and that added immensely to the scary factor. It was like looking through a window into these horrific events. Not like being told by the director when to be frightened.

Oh, that reminds me...I also thought DOMINION, the Exorcist prequel was pretty good. This was the original shelved version that was totally redone by Renny Harlin for the theatrical EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING (which was not so good).

Huh..I have never heard of the Dominion. And yes, the Exorcist was great. I even liked the OMEN. I went home and checked my head for a 666 after I saw it. (wont tell you what I found!!)

I also think that modern horror has gone into the gore territory. It's about making people squirmy, not about truly scaring them. Saw and Hostel leading the pack, but that seems to the way to go these days if you want a cheap scare.

The Saw & Hostel films are in the torture-porn sub-genre of horror. This thread covered it pretty well. The appeal of Torture-Porn and Popcorn?

Good horror films use suspense and tension and sound design and there is one that debuted this week without any visuals at all.
World's-first audio-only horror film
H.P. Lovecraft's 'The Dunwich Horror' at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 23.
