Steve Carell to Leave The Office

After one more season, which is when his contract ends.

In an interview with BBC Radio, he says, "(My) contract (runs) through next season."
And when asked whether he will continue with the show after that, he replies, "I don't think so. That will probably be my last year."

I think this season has been below average, apart from the major events with Jim & Pam. It'll be interesting to see whether they end the show completely, promote one of the current characters to manager or bring someone new in.

I've been a big fan of the show from the onset but even I feel that "the little show that could" is winding down. If it hadn't been for 40yr Old Virgin and The Office's little 6ep S1 being shown on NBC as a promotion device I doubt many would've latched on and The Office would've gone away quitely and unnoticed.

I hope the show goes out on a high note next year and wish Steve and its other budding cinematic stars the best!

This. This season has been very inconsistent, it seems like they've run out of things to do with the characters, and it's time to wind it down.

The Office used to be 'must watch' viewing for me every Thursday night. Now I record it watch at some point, I have 3 new episodes that I still need to watch, and not much motivation to do that.
Aside from the wedding, which was brilliant, the stories this season have been weak. This show needs to go, and Carell's contract expiring seems to be the best time for it. Just make next season better than this one please.

The show's been in diminishing returns mode for a couple years now. Hopefully this will spur them to create a great final season and go out big.

I agree with Kirby. I used to be excited to see this show every week and now I keep forgetting about it and tend to be disappointed when I do catch up with it. I think it has definitely 'jumped the shark' and should end soon. All that remains to be seen is it ending on a note of hope for Michael Scott (much like the UK show did with the David Brent character). If they'd just do that, I'll be satisfied. I wouldn't want it to keep going and continue becoming a weaker version of what it once was.

I agree with what's been said here. I think the best episodes of this season have been when Jim & Pam got married and when they had their baby. Otherwise it's been largely average.

Hopefully if next season is the last we'll be getting a Ricky Gervais appearance!

I think it's pretty safe to say that wen Carell goes so will the show.

Then again they may offer him a huge contract and try to get him to stay through it.

I think it is a smart move by him.

The show has steadily declined. A large part of that is due to NBC demanding so many episodes. I'll have to check but I think there were a few seasons with 30 episodes. You make that many episodes and the quality is going to go down and story ideas are going to dry up.

They just pumped the well dry.

When I first read the thread title, I thought it meant this season (as in he was ducking out of his contract).

This makes sense. The show, while still enjoyable, has really plateaued the last few years. Last week's, the one that about Erin, was really hilarious, but then we get one like this weeks that is very weak.

If it goes it with it being still somewhat strong, it will remain a TV classic and won't gain a bad taste the way some other shows gain when they are on longer than they should have been.

I agree with Docbrown777. This show has been on a decline since the Jim/Pam wedding episode. Most of the post-wedding episodes have been duds except the Jim/Pam baby episode. I wish the show had ended with the Season 5 finale or Jim and Pam's wedding or, if not, should end with the end of this season because I can't think of any new directions the show could take that could keep it refresh.

NBC would be wise to end the show despite the huge demo it gains with only am solid but modest total audience because with out Steve, the ratings will most likely tank.

NBC will have to revamp all of that night because 30 Rock will probably flatline with no office lead so the demo that is good for a low total viewer show will fade away and the 8-9pm slot is already bottom of the barrell.

I would like to see the US version of IT Crowd get made for that night.

Never got past pilot stage, infact not sure the pilot was ever finished to show the network.

Even the baby episode wasn't that memorable. Second half was beyond boring,

I thought the baby episode was barely watchable. The delaying premise was absurd and the breastfeeding stuff was absolutely cringe-worthy, and not in good way. Whatever it was, it certainly wasn't funny.
