Stephen Norrington to reinvent "The Crow"

Stephen Norrington (Blade) is signed to write and direct a reinvention of Alex Proyas' The Crow, which starred Brandon Lee in his last performance.

This will be Norrington's first film since 2003's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

What he had to say:

"Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style".

A realistic movie about someone coming back from the dead to unleash revenge?

Stephen Norrington sucks.

Does this mean they're redoing the Eric Draven story?

Heh, I guess he finally got over the failure that was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Last I heard, he'd been so frustrated by that movie that he'd retired from filmmaking.

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen is 2003

My mistake. Thanks for the correction.

He was very frustrated and last I heard he had "exiled" himself from filmmaking. That was Sean Connery's last film, too.

I feel for the guy, I really do. I'm sorry he had a bad experience.

But... seriously. Do we really need this? Did we not say everything we needed to say with the first one?

And no, I haven't seen the sequels.

I think the Crow is definitely a series that needs a second chance. The sequels were all lackluster. However, I hope this guy doesn't strip the Crow of its gothic elements. I don't want it to be too 'realistic'.

I guess James O'Barr, the creator of the original Crow comics that the first movie adapted, and the one who included all the gothic, mythic, and fantasy elements got it wrong. What would the creator know after all. Thank goodness for Steven Norrington.

Grrr...hated the original. Omnipotent supernatural forces are pretty lackluster villains OR heroes 'cause they are beyond defeat. Same problem with Freddy Kruger.

Yawn.

He wasn't omnipotent, his lifeforce was tied into the crow. So if the bird got hurt, so did he. Just as they explained in the book and all the films.

Besides, the concept of the Crow is based upon a fable.

So 14 years is now the interval that has to pass before Hollywood decides to remake a perfectly serviceable and well regarded hit movie with a cult following? Sigh.

I think The Crow was a great movie and it's unsurprising that Alex Proyas has gone on to even greater commercial success (even if that remains my favourite of his movies). Then you have to add in the poignancy of the performance by the late Brandon Lee. Son of a cult movie legend who died in mysterious circumstances, he was playing a slain rock star on the verge of stardom who returns from the grave to avenge himself and his fiancee. Lee and his fiance were to be married after this, the movie that should have pushed him into stardom.

Okay, so James O'Barr invented the character, not Brandon, so there have been sequels (in both movie and comic form) and a spin-off show with Marc Dacascos as Eric. But really - do we need this sequel? Can't they just leave the character alone for a little longer, out of respect, both to the star and the original movie?

I liked Norrington's directing on Blade and I'm glad he's come out of retirement. I just wish it was to make a new Blade movie, not a new version of The Crow ...
