Now THAT was frickin' scary. Probably the scariest King story I've ever read.

Indeed. Scariest thing was that they would send you through without making ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN your lights were out. As is, scan your brain. What if a person breathed the gas, but was resistant to it?

There's probably a test for that, which people would have to get before attempting their first Jaunt.

Actually now that I think about it, they would probably not use an anesthetic that is inhaled. They'd more likely hook up an IV to your arm. That way there'd be no possibility of resistance.

Like when I had my colonoscopy. They hooked me up to an IV, wheeled me into the operating room, and snap I immediately wake up in the recovery room getting dressed. I was WAY the hell under. It felt like I flicked a switch and travelled 25 minutes into the future!

Personally I loved Midnight Mass, I think Flanagan is a great writer/director.

The Jaunt was a rare jaunt into sci-fi for King wasn't it? Been a while since I read Skeleton Crew but doesn't King suggest it wasn't v well received?

I think it's a corker of a short story but I can't see how you can turn that into a series without major expansion of the story, realistically it would work best as a stand alone episode of the Twilight Zone, and even then a 25 minute classic episode not a new fangled hour long one, there's just not enough story there.

If we're talking non-horror/fantasy King movies, it's hard to argue that Shawshank isn't "his" best film.

It’s good. But 11/22/63 and Standby Me are really good too. For horror 1408 is better than the novella. I’d throw in Apt Pupil too.

Those are all good, no doubt. The thing with Shawshank, however, is that it's not just a great King adaptation. It's widely considered one of the greatest movies of the last half-century (if not more).

Specifically, what happens when a person Jaunts while awake. Their consciousness perceives the journey as taking possibly millions or billions of years...now just think about that for a minute. Stuck alone with your own thoughts, in an endless field of white, for that long? It would completely destroy your mind.

Bad enough just being a kid and thinking just five minutes about eternal life on and on and on. I've been there.

I know Stephen King likes the changes and says he wishes he'd thought of it; but I prefer the ambiguous ending of the story.

I'll join the folks who've suggested the original Stand miniseries, though I find it doesn't age well on multiple rewatches...but then, it was made for TV. I'm glad they released it on Blu-ray, though if you're expecting that to make it look amazing...that wasn't my experience.

I similarly liked The Shining miniseries, though the acting was...not all it could have been. It was nice to get an adaptation that was more faithful to the source material though.

Not quite a horror, but I thought Dolores Claiborne was very well done.

I'm a bit surprised that nobody's mentioned Stand by Me yet?

Yeah the film is so bleak, the novella at least has a hint of hope

The Shining miniseries was ok, but it did pale in comparison to Kubrick's The Shining. Steven Weber was no Jack Nicholson. Also, the cheesy topiary cgi didn't help matters.

The topiary cgi was almost as bad as the pac-man like cgi in The Langoliers, which happens to be another Stephen King adapted miniseries.

Storm of the Century, now that was a good Stephen King miniseries. Interestingly, it starred Steven Weber's Wings tv brother, Tim Daly. The Storm of the Century villain was creepy and wicked. The story was thrilling and it kept the viewer in suspense as to whose kid was going to be sacrificed to that creep.

I rewatched the mini series in October. It more closely follows the book. But it could have used a much larger budget. The CGI didn’t age well.

Kubrick gets too far away from the source material. The movie is good if you ignore the book.

And I do like Standby Me. Watched that this summer on Netflix. It’s been a long time since I saw it. But it holds up.
