Stephen Fry to join 'Holmes' sequel

Fry is playing a character who's actually -smarter- than Holmes? (not familiar with the mythos, sorry)

Yes, Mycroft is even more brilliant than his younger brother, but he's far too sedentary to be bothered with going out and solving crimes; he basically spends his entire life in his home and his social club, and the commute between them is pretty much the only movement he engages in. However, heads of state and other important personages come to him for advice.

Although in film and TV adaptations, he tends to be more active. In the Granada Sherlock Holmes series, due to actor availability issues, there was, IIRC, one episode where Mycroft substituted for Watson and one where he subbed for Holmes.

I have to point out that Sigerson Holmes is the smarter of the brothers....

;)

Gosh, that movie freaked me out and still does. That's one freaky eyeball.

Yeah, causes a lot of competition between the two. I think there have been times where he's refused to acknowledge his existence, or at least very reluctant to admit he's the smarter one.

I dunno. IIRC, Sherlock & Mycroft get along pretty well. They're both pretty reserved when it comes to personal issues, so it's no great surprise that they wouldn't speak of each other much and they're not very social. And, at least in Mycroft's 1st appearance, Sherlock was quick to tell Watson that Mycroft was the smarter one.

^ He was among the signatories to the letters protesting the Pope's visit.

I saw an interview where Stephen Fry said he wasn't opposed to a Papal visit, only to the Pope being treated as a head of state. It seemed like a bit of a ludicrous, nittpicking thing to get steamed up about.

Especially ludicrous since the Pope IS a head of state. Vatican City is a sovereign nation, albeit one that is completely surrounded by the city of Rome, has a birthrate of zero, and is the smallest country in the world. But still, Vatican City is a legitimate micro-country for international legal purposes. So it's sensible that the Pope, as the ostensible leader of the Vatican, would be treated as a head of state.

Well, it's all different in different movies and adaptations. In BBC's Sherlock series, Holmes definitely doesn't like to give Mycroft the upper hand. He keeps him waiting. There's that sibling rivalry in place. It just depends on the production and to how much of an extreme they take it. The way I see it, Holmes is reluctant to be the one to take information from his brother, as he's one to finding things himself and getting credit for it. Taking info from his brother only admits that his brother has the upper hand.

Fry is a brilliant choice for Mycroft. Not as familiar with Jared Harris' work, but I've liked him in the things I've seen him in. But, oh, how wonderful would it have been if David Warner was Moriarty?

I thought he looked familiar. I check IMDB and the first thing to come up next to his name is that he played the scientist in the wheelchair in Resident Evil: Apocalypse. He was also the old Will Robinson in the 1990s Lost in Space movie. And he played that weird guy that was stalking Kenneth Branagh in How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog.

Yeah, not familiar with this guy's work. I would of liked an older actor for the role. He kind of seems rather young to be playing Moriarty.

OK, I can see this thread going WAY off topic so let me just say that Mr Fry is no fan of religion, even less of the Catholic Church and probably even less of Catholic clergy, and I found some of his comments regarding Pope Benedict's recent UK visit to be insulting and personally offensive. Aside from that, I'm not a fan of him generally hence my original .

Over here in the UK, he is well-nigh impossible to get away from, especially recently so knowing he's going to be in a movie I was looking forward to is annoying for me.

We now return you to your planned discussion.

WTF?!?

Stephen Fry is AWESOME!!!

I have only discovered QI in the last couple of years and it's GREAT!!!

And, all sarcasm and irony aside, I am SHOCKED that there is anybody on this board(SF fans usually being a bit more liberal and forward thinking)who have ANY reverence for the church or its minions!!!

That is truly shocking to me!

You haven't visited The Neutral Zone yet, have you? :D

Did Tulin just pull a "the new Star Trek movie was a blockbuster by appealing to people who don't like to think for themselves" type of post?

Harris is a great choice. Made a great creepy villain in Fringe and is wonderful in Mad Men. I much prefer a 'didn't see that coming but it makes sense' piece of casting to a 'go for the obvious choice' one.

I think the obvious choice would've been a name actor to put on the posters, so in many ways going for a lesser known actor (as opposed to Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons, Stephen Lang, Gary Oldman) is more out of left field for a big studio blockbuster. This is kind of like getting William Sadler for Die Hard 2.

Interestingly enough, the Moriarty in the recent BBC modernised Sherlock was Irish, while Harris is Anglo-Irish, the English-reared son of one of Ireland's most famous actors, the late Richard Harris.

Exactly. I don't really get it. Wouldn't it have been amazing if they had pulled Sean Connery out of retirement for this?

If the fourth Indiana Jones film couldn't do it, what makes you think Sherlock Holmes had a chance of doing it?

Besides, Connery didn't have the best of luck the last time he made a movie set in the Victorian era. ;)

He's an improvement over Christopher Lee in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes but I still don't think Stephen Fry is quite fat enough to play Mycroft Holmes. Mycroft is a man who never leaves the comfort of his easy chair in the Diogenes Club if he can help it. I suppose wardrobe might be able to add extra padding to help Fry fit the role better.
Unless they give him a fat suit, he's definitely not fat enough to conform to Doyle's vision, but when has that bothered this series? :p
