Stephen Fry to join 'Holmes' sequel

^I've always liked him but I am finding him a bit tiresome lately, not least of all due to his ubiquity. What was it someone recently said of him over in the Doctor Who forum - a stupid person's idea of what a clever person is?

Still think he's a good fit for Mycroft though.

He's an improvement over Christopher Lee in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes but I still don't think Stephen Fry is quite fat enough to play Mycroft Holmes. Mycroft is a man who never leaves the comfort of his easy chair in the Diogenes Club if he can help it. I suppose wardrobe might be able to add extra padding to help Fry fit the role better.

I'm getting the indication that Irene Adler won't be in the sequel. That's a shame. I know she's only a very minor player in the Holmes mythos with a greatly inflated presence in the works of subsequent writers. But still, the way Rachel McAdams played her, she has such crackling chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. She & Holmes & Watson made an interesting, contrasting trio and I would be glad to see all three of them unite for another movie.

Instead, it sounds like we'll be getting a new leading lady played by Noomi Rapace from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. http://www.movieweb.com/movie/sherlock-holmes-2/NEvcMldYbMzUzx

BTW, what are your thoughts on Moriarty? Right now, if I had to just pick someone, I would go with Patrick Stewart. It's nice to see him be a villain and I think he sort of fits the physical description from "The Final Problem."

I dunno... Sir Patrick's a bit too, well, ubiquitous. One doesn't wish to see him become a cliche.

But if you want to see him as a villain, his version of Macbeth will air on PBS on October 6.

^Kickass! I loved his King Claudius in Hamlet. I'll make sure to keep an eye out for MacBeth as well. (BTW, what period are they doing MacBeth in?)

So if not Stewart, who do you see as Moriarty? Daniel Day-Lewis is another actor I think could be interesting in the role. (I just hope those horrible rumors I read about Brad Pitt aren't true.)

David Warner. He's always played a great villain, and I think he could make a great Moriarty. I've always seen Moriarty as someone older than Sherlock Holmes; someone experienced in the ins and outs of society in order to play games with him. According to a book I read, The Unofficial Biography of Sherlock Holmes, he used to work for the government and takes a turn when someone close to him, his wife if I remember correctly, dies, while blaming the government for it.

^Good call! David Warner is always brilliant in everything. And he's getting up in years, so we should be doing everything possible to put him in everything possible, leaving us with an even larger library of Warner titles at hand.

David Warner would be nice in theory -- in fact, I'm surprised he hasn't played Moriarty in some form already. But he hasn't had a high profile lately, and since it's a blockbuster movie they'd probably go for someone more prominent. Like maybe Alan Rickman, who's free now that production on the Harry Potter series is over.

I've seen Fry in very little (mostly on "Bones" believe it or not) and enjoyed his performance quite a bit. He seems a good fit for Mycroft, I can totally see it. He and RDJ playing off each other should be super fun to watch.

Yeah, I thought he had played Moriarty at least once, but I can't find reference to it. Maybe I'm just thinking of him playing Jack The Ripper in Time After Time. I agree on Alan Rickman as another good choice. Plus he has the same kind of tenor in his voice that David Warner has. Both can play menacing roles.

Fry Rules :techman: so am very hapy to hear hears he going to be in the sequel. I doubt hes playing the villian though it would be cool because he could be a great bad guy.

He's not playing a villain he's playing Holmes brother.

Fry is playing a character who's actually -smarter- than Holmes? (not familiar with the mythos, sorry)

This should be interesting. :)

Yeah, causes a lot of competition between the two. I think there have been times where he's refused to acknowledge his existence, or at least very reluctant to admit he's the smarter one.

I really want to see Alan Rickman play Holmes some day. He'd be perfect in the role (and he'd be completing Basil Rathbone's double of the Sherrif of Nottingham and Holmes)

Kind of ironic since his old comedy partner Hugh Laurie is playing a Holmes metaphor on House.

Laurie was Watson opposite Fry's Mycroft for the BBC.

^ He was among the signatories to the letters protesting the Pope's visit.

I saw an interview where Stephen Fry said he wasn't opposed to a Papal visit, only to the Pope being treated as a head of state. It seemed like a bit of a ludicrous, nittpicking thing to get steamed up about. My guess that if JP2 were still Pope, we wouldn't have heard nearly as much opposition.

On topic, SF as Mycroft is a good choice as a counterpoint to RD Jr's Holmes, who is a lot more physical than we've usually seen.
