Saying there is a technical difference between pedophile and not a pedophile is accurate because words mean something.

So homophobe means people are scared of gays? Words have only the meanings we give them.

Pedophile - a person who is sexually attracted to children.

That's the meaning, we as a society come up with what "children" would be considered. Most places in the USA it's between 16-18.

I don't know very many people who would consider someone who is sexually attracted to a 17 year old a pedophile. A creep or a pervert? Absolutely. I also don't know very many people (aisde form someone's mother) who would consider a 17 year old a literal "child".

You're conflating terms and meaning are almost the same thing. "Minor" does not equal "child".

And yes, a "homophobe" is by definition someone who is afraid of homosexuals. It also means someone who hates homosexuals or homosexuality.

Roman Polanski is a convicted forcible child rapist, I've never seen any evidence of repentance and I think it's sick the way that Hollywood keeps giving the guy work and honors. But there's no way in hell I would advocate excising Rosemary's Baby or Chinatown from the collective memory.

I didn't at the time knew he was a pedophile until I found out and now I banned his film DVD The Pianist to play in my home , the dirty filthy nonce.

He is a rapist, yes, not a pedophile. There is a very important distinction. ...sorry, go on... or not.

I'm all for clarity of language, but if it even remotely comes across as saying that drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl is somehow a lesser crime than molesting a ten-year-old who hasn't gone through puberty yet (random example), I think I'd just sit that argument out. Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees.

I doubt that's what you intended to say, but it comes off as saying "What Polanski did was bad, sure, but at least he wasn't a pedophile." I'm not sure what's so very "important about the distinction" in this context except from a clinical standpoint if you were treating the person in question.

My point is we choose as a society what we decided is right and wrong. Having sex in most states with a 16 year old is legal, having sex with a 13 year old is not. What you want to call it is just a personal matter.
